I think this team as actually overachieving for what it is. Let's take a realistic look at what we have.

A great scorer in Melo who is actually one of few max players worth the money. Yet he is not James or Durant. Not his fault really, you only get so many guys like that in a generation. He does the best he can with the ability that he has (he is not exactly the most athletic guy out there, just a really skilled player).

Outside of that, out next best offensive threat is JR, who is a 6th man energy off the bench type of guy at his best. Then Felton who is just a tad bit above average at the position. Amare is a mystery and an injury waiting to happen every night, can't really rely on him. That's pretty much where it ends offensively sans some miscellaneous specialty players like Novak etc.

Defensively we have Chandler, and that's about it. Shump is a 2nd year players coming off major injury and playing like it.

A bunch of scrappy old guys who always get hurt and or tired fill out the roster.

Its just not that good.

They are playing better then they should be expected to play, so just enjoy it and stop ruining it for yourself by having unrealistic expectations.

Only Miami, OKC, and maybe Spurs have a real shot at winning anything over the next few years anyways. Its just how it is.

A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

I think they did better than expected simply because they never expected this success in the first place.
As a group they were trying to give the team the best shot by playing team ball on both ends.
Then they get ahead of themselves and also run out of gas. NBA also figured them out.
The only hope for the Knicks to stay competitive is to accept their deficiencies and try to compensate it by smarts and hard work.
This may not be enough to get places but enough to get my respect.
