To Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony is the toughest cover in the NBA. Tougher, even, than LeBron James.

"For me, yeah," Bryant told Stephen A. Smith in an interview Wednesday.

"He’s always been a player that I enjoyed guarding the most," Bryant said. "He was the most difficult because of his size and his speed."

Listen to Kobe's comments:

Bryant added that Anthony's shooting range, ability to drive to the rim and score in the post make him one of the most lethal offensive weapons in the NBA.

"Melo does it all and he’s as strong as a bull," Bryant said. "For me, I weight (180 pounds) soaking wet. Going up against that bull, man, it’s fun but it’s extremely challenging."

Bryant will face the challenge of playing Anthony and the Knicks on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden.

Bryant, who loves playing at the Garden, knows he'll be facing an improved Knicks team.

The Knicks are off to a 16-5 start, their best in nearly 40 years.

Watching from afar, Bryant believes they can contend with the Heat for the Eastern Conference title this season.

Melo's Place

Carmelo Anthony is the Knicks' biggest star. He's also one of the all-time greats.
ESPN NY's Top 25 Knicks Vote

"I believe so, because they believe it," he said. "They believe that they belong on that stage now. Whether or not they can overcome that remains to be seen. But they believe they can."

"When I watch them play, they play with a belief," Bryant said. "They believe that they deserve to be in this championship conversation. They’re playing with a conviction that wasn’t there before."

Bryant was asked if Anthony belonged in the early-season MVP conversation.

"Oh, for sure. Is that even a question? I don’t think that’s a question," Bryant said.

BlueSeats "I like anyone who can make Lebron cry. Melo seems to do it a lot."

Its a trap,

He is looking for Melo and the Knicks to soften up when we play them tonight. Melo needs to pay this compliment back with a triple double tonight.

There's about 10 NBA analysts and probably 5-10 players who agree on Melo being in the MVP discussion.

And then there's fishmike and tkf.

Stop it already. It's Lebron, KD, and everyone else.

haha, good way to call him out on that.. if he takes your bet, I might want a piece of the action as well...

what is even more interesting is that Andrew came on here and specifically said to stop the baiting... yet we have the same posters not only baiting but going after posters.... I wonder how andrew will continue to handle this going forward, especially since he pretty much said, cut the crap...

First it was "The Knicks don't have an MVP candidate, and that's ok"

Well, they do. He's a very legitimate candidate.

Now, its "haha.. put your money where your mouth is. $100 says Melo isnt in the top 3"

You're running out of excuses.

It doesn't really matter for me if Melo's in the conversation or not, or if he's top 3 or top 15.

He's balling and leading our #1 place 16-5 team. He's playing "the right way". Isn't that all that matters to us as Knicks fans?

I'd put Melo behind Durant at this moment.

We watch more Knicks than OKC but Durant is having a great season as is OKC.

Melo is playing the best ball of his career.

18-6 was a nice run. This is continuing.

I don't think prior critique of Melo was at all out of line.

Woodsons scheme works so far.

Is it sustainable?

Tune in and find out.

25% of the season done, isnt it too early to worry about this (for or against carmelo).

if they get to (and past the ecf which would be $), i dont really care if he is or isnt the mvp. beat la thurs... keep the pressure on bos/bk/mia.

GO TEAM VENTURE!!!!!

It's not a "trap"; it's the truth. Kobe Bryant is the closest thing to MJ23 since Michael Joran himself. When has Kobe Bryant even gone out of his way to consider an NBA player as the toughest cover in the NBA?

Like I've stated time and time again Carmelo Anthony is nothing short of a scoring phenom. A pure scoring machine is what Melo has always been. The greatest scorer I've ever seen as a Knick and I loved Ewing for all his worth, but not even Ewing could score at Melo's clip/rate. Melo can score from anywhere on the court. He takes over games. Dominates opposing defenses for 4 quarters strong and may go down as the greatest scorer in Knicks franchise history.

The man is on pace to rank top 5 all time in NBA scoring. Some negative critics who've never had an understanding of overall NBA history may consider Melo a "chucker" but when in reality, he's one of the greatest scorers of all-time. Now that he's improved his defense since arriving to New York ala where his heart's at; he's without question one of the greatest players in the world. Top 5 without question.

Kobe Bryant after his 10th NBA seasons put up a total of 16,886 points. Carmelo Anthony has put up 16,453 points (and hasn't even completed his 10th NBA season yet). Currently in his 10th season as of right now.

If Melo continues his average of 27.7 points per game during our final 61 regular season games, that'll be another 1,689 points on top of his already 16,453 points scored.

Carmelo Anthony could be at 18,142 points after his 10th season of play when compared to Kobe's 16,886 after 10 NBA seasons. Melo also has a higher career field goal percentage (.457%) when compared to Kobe Bryant's (.454%).

I loved Ewing for all his worth but Melo is quickly becoming my all-time favorite Knick. Led a New York school in Syracuse to their only National Championship. Has always dreamed (dating back to his childhood days) of playing inside of Madison Square Garden for our Knicks. New York bloodline. Forced his way out of Denver in order to play for the Mecca of New York. Passed up on his home borough of Brooklyn in order to lead our Knicks into potential/future greatness. But yet, we have a couple of Knick fans who aren't full blown Melo supporters? The man's heart and soul is here with our Knicks franchise. If Melo ever leads us to an NBA World Championship? He'll own New York City once and for all. Forever too.

Melo will not get respect until he wins a championship.

Same thing happened when people were hating on Lebron.
