Uptown wrote:Say what you want about Stern, but he has to be credited with doing a masterful job of marketing the NBA. People forget how bad of an image the NBA had before Stern took over. The league was ramsacked by drugs, and all kinds of madness. Have to give Stern some credit for cleaning up the image and league and bringing it back from the dark ages.As far as Pop is concerened, you really cant defend him. How can you blame Stern fro trying to protct his business? I know everyone loves Pop, but what he did was disgraceful to the game. When is it okay to throw a game?
Commercialism/Players marketed the NBA not Stern..he gets some credit for globalization and TV deals but really just by way of nature things would progress outside the states because of player popularity and endorsements. Is the game more popular here in the States now compared to the Magic/Bird....Jordan era? I doubt it.
You realize Stern wasn't even responsible for putting the Dream Team together right? Which was probably the biggest stepping stone in taking the game Global
Actually Stern hasn't done anything to clean up the NBA. After he went semi anti urban pop culture on the Allen Iverson era we witnessed...
Kobe Rape
Brawl at The Palace
Knicks Sexual Harrassment Scandal
Tim Donaghy Scandal
Players openly demanding trades derailing teams
Coaches getting fired left and right
Free Agency Debacle
2 NBA lockout shortened seasons
2 Expansion Teams franchises bottoming out
2 Franchises relocating screwing fans over
Teams borrowing money at an alarming rate because of financial irresponsibility
Players literally robbing teams of their finances
Wreckless owners handing out THAT RIDICULOUS contracts
Record lows in season attendance
Rigged playoff games
Tanking
Flopping
Quality of play falling off at a rapid rate
Positions in the league have become near extinct
So no.... "YOU CAN SAY WHAT YOU WANT ABOUT STERN"
