I don't want to sound bad but what if Shump don't come back the same as before he was injured?

Papabear Says

Shump suffered a serious injury and a lot of players don't come back the same. We depend on Shump to guard our fastest and best opponents. What if he lost a step or not being able to make cuts and defend the way he used to. I hope that he can but what if he can't? What is the next step?

well you make a fair point. Plus the Knicks always seem to have bad luck with injuries

He won't, at least not this season. ACL years are almost always two year injuries. Whenever he comes back we'll have to be happy with whatever he gives us and to remember that he won't be fully recovered until next season.
Now the joy of my world is in Zion How beautiful if nothing more Than to wait at Zion's door I've never been in love like this before Now let me pray to keep you from The perils that will surely come

The way I read it in some posts. Shump's legend grows with each game on the IR!

If he does not return, we'll still be "Proud" of him right?

Lets hope for a strong return. We can talk about it or just wait and see what happens.

No one should expect a player to come back and just be 100% of the bat. What I do think is that he should be able to help with defense which is all we need off the bench. Another quick guard. He's a very hard worker as we saw from his rookie summer prep leading up to the season. He's a bonus at this point. The Knicks are solid already and with Shump back even in limited minutes it will give this team another boost in depth. It's nothing to worry about in the least at this point. Let's hope and pray for more continued good news on his progress with no setbacks.

Papabear- I think you'll see a guy similair to what you saw last season- he was injured in the first game and wasn't fully healthy all year-and still played very well- this time they're not rushing him back- I think this Knicks regime will handle this right, and Iman has plenty of willpower and smarts plus physical ability to return strong-
We might never see those crazy dunks and off the charts athletic moves offensivley he was said to have done at the draft tryouts- but I bet he comes back with a more measured, but still aggresive style-
Part of the Knicks bad history w injuries is due to being in desperate lack of depth situations and guys being rushed back- Thanks to Glensanity that won't happen now-
If you are still following the team and reading sites like this, there is nothing, short of your own demise, that is going to throw you off this train.

I don't think we'll see the athleticism & high flying dunks til next season. The explosion he had, that's what will take another year to return. But defense is so much about effort, and the guy is relentless. That's what he'll bring to the table, which will just add to our defensive principles as a team.

Well said NYDiva, well said. An injury such as this one (a serious injury) can also do many of things in regards to a players career moving forward. A blessing in disguise. Chances are, Iman Shumpert has never been as mentally tough, as he currently is today (basketball wise). An injury like this, can slow the game down for young kids. He's had a chance to work on his shot more than ever before during his rehab. Who knows, Shumpert may come back guns blazing as an actual scorer with a very decent/solid shot. This kid is full of heart. Just an overall basketball junkie. Outside of basketball, he really does eat, sleep, ****, rap and dream basketball. During recovery he's worked on his shot and god knows how many hours of film being able to study his own game.

When Iman Shumpert returns, I believe it's safe to say that we're getting a pretty damn good basketball player back in return. We all know this. The number one fear is re-injury, but players can't think like that. He'll have to stay aware at all times but in regards to playing with fear; Shumpert doesn't seem like that type of fighter. As a fan? I won't pull for Shumpert with fear either, I'll just enjoy this kid while his talents are high. If an injury happens, then it happens. It's nice to see how strong of support this fan base has for a kid such as Shump. Plays with nothing but heart. He's earned this support and I believe he's earned our hype until he returns.

I don't think any of us expect him to be at the defensive level he was at when he left. But, I think his shot will probably be better.

Shumps plays great defense in a variety of ways. He uses his INSANE foot speed and hand speed (with those LONG arms). The hand speed will be at least at the level it was before the injury (as I imagine he practices that) - his arm length is still the same . But, his foot speed will be much slower, I would think - just due to the knee injury recovery process. He is not going to be skying in for jams from the get go, but that don't matter. What does matter is that he stay in front of his man. He got beat plenty last year so I hope we don't start saying he is getting beat because of his injury (which sometimes will be the case). Let's face it, he is defending the teams fastest and best guard or even 3. At this level even the fastest guards get beat and sometimes beat up.

Thanks. When I think of Shump, I think of the Valentine's day game vs the Raptors in which his pivotal steal and score put us in a position to come back and win. Most people focused on Lin's GW three, which was indeed huge. But we don't win that game w/o Shump's steal (one of his 4 steals on the night), which changed the entire tone of the game in the last minute, and gave us the momentum.

As long as Shump does what we know he can do, which is give a tireless effort on defense, he will help the team. Like you said, he's still got those arms, he'll still be able to poke the ball away for a steal. He'll still be able to hound his man and slow him down.

I find it impossible not to support the kid. People say that JR Smith reminds them of John Starks; but in terms of passion for the game, heart, and defense, it's Shump for me.

It is very unlikely that Shump will return to form this year but I expect him to contribute and help this defense.

Having a healthy Shumpert is indeed a gamechanger (no offense to Ronnie Brewer). The way he can transition from defense to offense in a split second is a definitely a benefit for this veteran team. That said, I'd rather him heal up 110% than him coming back a shell of himself constantly thinking of re-injuring his knee. If that means after the All Star Break, March, April or next season, so be it. He's only 22, so I'm hoping (knock on wood) that he's with the Knicks for the long haul.

I think he is going to struggle through injuries for most of his career. This is the second injury he suffered in a short period of time, for someone built so solid it was troubling to see him go down the way he did with no contact just dribbling the ball.

Hopefully he bounces back, because he is the last young piece we are going to have here for a long time. We need another guy that can generate offense desperately going forward

I don't want to sound bad but what if Shump don't come back the same as before he was injured?
