Roughly 10 days into the 2012-13 season, the New York Knicks are the only unbeaten team in the N.B.A., having defeated Dallas, 104-94, to improve to 4-0. Two of their four victories have come against the Philadelphia 76ers, a 100-84 victory in Madison Square Garden on Nov. 4 and a 110-88 win in Philadelphia the next night.

Sixers Coach Doug Collins offered unsolicited praise for the Knicks before and after his team beat the Celtics in Boston, 106-100. He shifted from discussing his team’s defensive shortcomings to extolling the Knicks, who are responsible for his team’s only losses through five games.

“I’m not going to overreact to two losses to New York, because I think right now, arguably they could be playing as well as anybody in the East,” Collins said. “If Miami is 1, then they’re 1A. They played great against us on both ends of the floor.”

The Knicks were ranked No. 1 in the N.B.A. through three games in point-differential, points against and turnovers. The three Knicks’ victories were by an average of 19.3 points a game — Miami was next at 10.2 — and all four wins have come by at least 10 points. Their defense was allowing 85.3 points a game.

Coach Mike Woodson starts two point guards. The Knicks averaged a league-fewest 12 turnovers a game over their first three games and then turned it over only nine times in their victory over Dallas.

Woodson “has them playing very good defense,” Collins said. “If they can keep moving the ball and defending, they’re going to be really good.”

Collins said the Sixers were sluggish in the first meeting between the two but then jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the rematch. The lead didn’t last.

“They just blitzed us,” Collins said. “They had two great games against us.”

He added: “They’ve got what I like to call a decorated team. I always look for things like that. Kidd has won an N.B.A. title and a couple of gold medals. Carmelo has won an N.C.A.A. title and a couple gold medals and a bronze medal in the World Championships. Chandler won an N.C.A.A. title and a gold medal. Felton won an N.C.A.A. championship. To me, that carries a lot of weight because that means they have played and won big games.”

..................................................

Chandler actually won an NBA Championship and didn't go to College, but I get his meaning....

The fact that Philly is undefeated when not playing the Knicks gives our two wins over them that much more credibility.

Rankings at this point are pointless. Lets talk at the 20 game mark.

Why so we can look like Philly and fade at the end?

Some teams run hard out the gate and some coast along.

I think the coaches know what they see.

So are we all not allowed to talk at all until the all star break? No rooting, no happiness. Just sit stoic until the break or the Knicks win a championship...until then nothing.

Every other city/team's fans get to point out positives as they occur.

You guys should just chill with the "the jury is still out" rants.

Pretty please.

Let's go Knicks. That's amare

We can talk about anything and get excited too. I just can't take stock in rankings after 4 games.

U can only get giddy with excitement and make season/career long proclamations after such a short sampling only if it involves Lin...

This is the first time in over a decade that I thought the Knicks might have a better season than the Yankees.

I knew things were different on opening night. The Knicks might not maintain a #1 team ranking but I don't need to wait 20 games to know that this is a very good team.

Or the N*yets. And then you really don't even need a sample at all.

ONE one way to go and thats "Down"

Hey, its all good and it beats being 0-4 so I'll enjoy it.

They will have some tests and have a lot to play for.

Its meaningful early in the season. Thats new!
