This is why i feel good about this team as is. They have an identity for the first time in as long as i can remember. We aren't a Big 3 model team or anything of that sorts. We have a team where the offense is built around one of the best offensive players in the league who needs space to operate. We have shooters and pick and roll players around him. We have no other mid range isolated scorers outside of Melo. But most of all we are a defensive team. No matter what happens, this team is a defensive team that will be one of the best in the league. Melo is typically the worst defensive player on the floor at any given time (maybe with the exception of Novak) and that is how its supposed to be. Felton and Chandler are great fits with Melo. Kidd and Brewer did a phenomenal job as role players who defend, make smart plays, and in Kidd's case, knock down open shots. This team should continue to look to add 3 and D type wing players in the future, but i feel great about the identity of this team moving forward.

We have a team of grown ass men.

We been there (playoffs) and done that (Kidd, Chandler, Sheed with championship rings/ Kidd, Melo and Chandler with Olympic gold, )

Our coach demands defense from everyone. Melo got the memo.

Better not mess with us.

I said in the off-season that low turnovers was the key to the Knicks season. People really do not realize how bad the pgs were. Even Lin who was great would still turn the ball over and this team needs all the possession they can get.

I was hoping the Knicks would double down on the defensive end and that's exactly what they did. It's more than just WANTING to focus on D. You have to also make sure to bring in defensive talent too. Felton, Kidd, Brewer, Prigioni and KT are all guys that defend. Then add in Camby and Sheed and you have a team built on D. I wasn't so sure that Woody would have the answers on offense, but he was smart enough to adopt some of MDA's stuff and when we can get some more post ups mixed in with STAT and Sheed that should also help. But overall the defensive focus is great to see.

I really like how active Brewer was. He's WAY better defensively than Landry was. We have so many guys that can move their feet on D, help, recover and shut down lanes. We see on ball pressure applied early and often. Hey even Novak had some good defensive plays!

How about Melo's D on Lebron? He was very active and had some really good defensive stands against Lebron. If this team gets that kind of effort from Melo more often this year, it's gonna be good.

This is how teams like the 2011 Mavs and 2001 Sixers were able to exceed expectations. They only had one real scoring star (Dirk, Iverson) who was only mediocre defensively. But everyone else is the rotation was a shooter and/or defender that fit a role. That is how this team is currently constructed.

Also all that depth the Mavs had is similar to the Knicks. Lots of vet depth. They can all play limited minutes which people don't realize that older players can still play but just not heavy minutes.

Yeah, tough not to really love what we saw in the opener. It wasn't just that we played a great game vs. a great team. It was that we really saw the team that Grunwald and Woodson envisioned when they made all the changes (i.e. a defensive-minded team with lots of experience and depth built around a superstar scorer). And to see that team literally right off the opening tip of the season against Miami was pretty impressive.

And this was with basically nothing from Sheed, and without Camby, Shumpert and Amare. (Now that I say that, it will be interesting to see how Woodson gets minutes for everyone once we are finally at full strength. I mean, how deep is this team????)

Anyway, my main point I wanted to make was that what really hit home with me in watching Friday night was just how much intelligence and experience this team has. It's one thing to see it on paper, but another to see it in action. We have so many guys who really know what they are doing. They may not be the most talented guys, at least at this point in the careers, but smarts and experience count for so much in the NBA, and I think we saw that vs. the Heat.

That said, it was just one game, and obviously we were extra pumped, so I'm not going to get too excited. But I do think it laid the foundation to give us an opportunity to get off to a really good start and build some momentum and confidence that could pave the way for a very nice season. I have seen over and over again in sports what a hot start can do for a team in terms of leading to a great season that defies most expectations. Which means we have to keep it up vs. the Sixers and then take it from there.

I'll subscribe to this.

I really think that those are the two teams I would say we are built like, very blue collar, very much about defense plus bench play being held up by a elite scoring.

And if we get Amri to come off the bench he can be Terry!!!!!!!

Factorial

nixluva - I wasn't so sure that Woody would have the answers on offense, but he was smart enough to adopt some of MDA's stuff and when we can get some more post ups mixed in with STAT and Sheed that should also help.

Let's FINALLY set the record straight

Woodson played four years for Knight and worked with Larry Brown for years. Woodson's first pro coach was Red Holzman. Knight and Woodson talk frequently.

“I had dinner with (Bobby Knight) just this last week in New York. “We sat and chatted for about three hours. We talked basketball. What better advice to take? He’s done everything you could possibly do in basketball, and done it as good as anybody who has ever coached the game. How do you not respect Bob Knight?” - Mike Woodson, after practice last week

Mike Woodson worked with Mike D'Antoni for four months.

For all his madness and kaleidoscopically inventive profanity, Knight is one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time. The hallmarks of his style—the motion offense, man-to-man defense, focus on the fundamentals, devotion to discipline—have spread throughout basketball for the past five decades at every level. It’s impossible to imagine the sport without him. And there may be no more devoted acolyte to Knight, his style of basketball, his view of the world—all the good things, without the chair-throwing—than Mike Woodson - Will Leitch, NYMagazine

Woodson draws TONS more from years with Holzman, Brown and Bobby Knight than the nanosecond he sat beside Mike D'Antoni.

The Knicks true identity is simply put play without Amare Stoudemire

Im happy with the results however the only thing i fear is having the identity of: great d but streaky 3pt shooting. I wish that MDA influence was gone!
Knicks should be improved: win about 40 games and maybe sneak into the playoffs. Melo, Rose and even Noah will have some nice moments however this team should be about PORZINGUS. the sooner they make him the primary player, the better
