Love his hair. Seems to have a good motor and is pretty athletic(against the 2nd unit). Turns the ball over a bunch and is pretty raw but I hope he makes the team.

nyshakenbake - did you watch the game? Copeland had only 2 turnovers. He caught numerous passes in traffic. Some from off balance angles. As a matter of fact, all of his points were from close range, with Celtics swarming him. Didn't look raw last night.

It felt like he had more. PLus he did have that pass he bobbles and was lucky to get it to the basket. And yes, he did look kind of raw. I did like how he finished on the drives.

Copeland ran the floor gracefully and Pablo threaded one spicy bounce pass after another straight into his paws. Cope's got the body control of an airdancer in traffic, but he managed to flail the ball through the rim with contact on quite a few possessions. It didn't look good at all, and it came after he sat the whole first half and looked awful through his first few minutes, but 21 points in 19 minutes is 21 points in 19 minutes.

Copeland's game right now is about confidence...He is a player that doesn't feels he belongs and him game reflects that..I think he is a keeper..He needs to be around the game more..He needs to see the tough battles in the Atlantic division and bring his A game and not worry about performing...He is older but has a motor and can help in March and April...Keep him!!

I absolutely loved the block at the end of the game.

Copeland is the real deal.

He can run the pick and roll.
He can create his own shot in traffic.
He can drive to the basket and finish.
He is a decent defender.

He is a steal..

Copeland put up the mass majority of his stats against players that either won't be in the NBA much longer or players that will be practice / bench players at best. He basically did well on PnR against extremely poor PnR defense. He does not seem very athletic nor did he finish strong around the rim. I don't see the big deal.

He is playing to get the 15th spot on the roster. He looked really good on the court last night. I don't think the expectations are for him to be putting up 21 pts in 20 minutes against the Celtics in the playoffs but he certainly looked like a guy worthy of the 15th spot on the roster.

Look at the post I actually responded to then look at my response. I never said Copeland could not make the 15th spot. I am simply pointing out that the post I quoted, in my opinion, is full of hyperbole.

DOn't ride me about this....I like his game..he was playing against the scrub line so I'm excited but I'm not ready to declare him the next coming of anything. He looked raw and not a great ball handler vs the bench of the Celtics. That's all I'm saying.

The Understudy

In the Knicks’ preseason opener, against the Washington Wizards, Copeland struggled, scoring 3 points in 15 minutes. After Saturday’s game, Copeland said a stomach virus was the reason for his poor performance against the Wizards.

“I had thrown up all night long,” he said. “I didn’t sleep much, and I was really dehydrated coming into that game. I went out there, tried to get through it.”

A member of the Knicks’ summer league team in July, Copeland led the Knicks with 17 points and 3 rebounds in a loss to the Phoenix Suns.

Woodson said he could tell Copeland, who has spent most of his career playing in Europe, had improved since then.

Copeland said: “I’ve learned so much from patience and persistence and just being around these guys every day. Hopefully, I showed them something. I think I can do a lot more.”

I think Copeland received what the other invites have not as of yet, a true chance to play within the system, and not just clumped together on the court.

In that second half, Copeland was featured, and he was Pablo's primary target the whole time, so it's easier to produce when you expect so.

We have a few games left and i want to see the other guys featured as well, at least to see what they got too.

But Copeland took his opportunity and shined, especially against a team that absolutely trying to win the contest.

Knicks Coach Mike Woodson kept rotating players in and out during the first half of Saturday’s preseason game against the Boston Celtics — everyone except for Chris Copeland. While Woodson used 11 players in the first half, Copeland watched from the bench, eager to get his chance.

When the Knicks went into the locker room at halftime, Woodson felt good about his team’s performance. But then his assistant coaches told him he had not played Copeland, one of the few players trying to earn a spot on the 15-man roster.

Woodson adjusted, and Copeland entered the game late in the third quarter, making an immediate impact and leading a group of reserves to a 98-95 comeback victory in overtime. In 19 minutes, Copeland scored 21 points and had four rebounds.

Copeland’s performance was the first standout game from any of the six players the Knicks invited to training camp. The team has 13 players with guaranteed contracts, leaving available two spots.

“I’m still just thankful and blessed to have this opportunity, but I was extremely anxious,” Copeland said of sitting on the bench for so long. “I was just hoping to get a shot at it, and my teammates told me to stay ready.”

Once he was in the game, Copeland found himself in a new role. Woodson used Copeland in a smaller lineup that included four guards for the majority of the fourth quarter and overtime. Copeland, who is 6-foot-8, ran pick-and-roll plays with point guards Pablo Prigioni and Jason Kidd.

“I was learning on the fly, honestly,” said Copeland, who likes to shoot from the outside. “I’ve seen it a lot in practice, and I know Coach preaches being versatile for me, so that’s what I tried to do.”

Copeland showed his strength and was physical as he set picks, drove to the basket and received quick passes from Prigioni and Kidd. He also made 9 of 13 free throws.

“I thought he sat patiently and was probably wondering why he didn’t play the first half,” Woodson said. “When we got him there, he played his butt off.”

Copeland’s best moments were in overtime after he missed a long, off-balanced jumper that would have won the game in regulation. He made critical plays in the final minute of overtime to preserve the win.

When the Knicks had a 1-point lead with 11 seconds left, Copeland was able to grab a rebound. He calmly made two free throws before blocking Jamar Smith’s 3-point shot as time expired.

Kidd was on the court during overtime and was impressed with Copeland’s play.

“His name was called, and he responded, and that’s a true professional,” Kidd said. “It’s great to see. He has been working extremely hard in camp, and it showed.”

If he does make the roster, the Knicks might need Copeland to play early in the season. The team is already dealing with injuries to Marcus Camby (strained left calf) and Amar’e Stoudemire (bruised left knee). Rasheed Wallace, another forward, is getting in shape and has not yet scrimmaged with the team.

After Saturday’s win, Copeland could smile in the locker room. He knew he had played well. But he also knew his opportunity almost never came.

“It was fun to get out there,” he said. “I thank Coach for getting me in the game.”

Copeland has looked way better than James White.

Copeland isn't starter material but I think he can be solid off the bench.

Right now Copeland has the inside track on the 15th spot over Shurna.

That's assuming these are the other 14:

PG - Raymond Felton, Jason Kidd, Pablo Prigioni
SG - Ronnie Brewer, Iman Shumpert, JR Smith
SF - Carmelo Anthony, James White, Steve Novak
PF - Amare Stoudemire, Rasheed Wallace, Kurt Thomas
C - Tyson Chandler, Marcus Camby

He's raw, but proven in his short time that he can play a little O and D. Good insurance to have on the bench.

I watched that game and 95% of Copelands P&R plays were all moving screens...

I have always liked Darko as a role player, under rated and I think he was a good solid pickup for the Celtics.

OMG I am not the only one who noticed that. No one ever said anything so I left it alone. Cope has the worse screen technique I have ever seen. How can the coaches not see this and fix it.

because 99% of everyone here is bias, as Knick fans, after all this is a KNICKS forum.

his screens were so blatantly obvious yet not one call, i do not think he would get away with it in a regular season game, especially being a rook.

He was moving and not letting the defender get through, blocking by using his elbows/arms, and running in the defenders as he was rolling.
it made KG's screens look very clean and legit.

I agree about DArko. The guy is massive and skilled. I think he was a great pick up.
