Feel bad for him, but glad he won't be hogging a much needed roster spot. Berman just tweeted that he's having patella surgery.

I actually feel bad for him...he shouldn't have been in this situation to begin with. Hopefully the team continues to take care of him going forward. I don't believe in Karma at all, but this is very ironic to say the least. May his recovery be a speedy one.

I don't doubt that they will, and he'll get another shot with the team next season. Does a player on a non guaranteed contract get his full pay in the event of an injury like this?

Off topic, I just read that Lin said he isn't fully recovered from his knee surgery and that his speed and agility isn't back yet. What the heck is going on there? It shouldn't take 6 months to recover from a tiny meniscus tear, when that's the length of time it takes for patella surgery...

Hey it's a built in excuse for Lin sucking in Houston and NY justifying not resigning him. Just joking! Or am I...

It does if you don't want to end up wearing Chris Paul's terrifyingly large knee brace.

See, I remember when his injury was first announced, and I thought about CPs injury and how long it took him to get back on track. But then it seemed like most of the media made out it was a quick recovery time, and then pointed to Grant Hills speedy return.

So now I'm really not sure- is it a 1 year recovery thing? I'm mainly concerned because Shump tore his meniscus as well as his ACL, so is that going to further hinder his recovery?

I think Chris was just a favor the knicks gave to JR for signing that contract..

I'm sure Lins durabilty was in question when thinking about matching that contract

I can't imagine coming back from patella surgery in six months, especially to try and play at a high level. I hope he takes all the time he needs and tries to make a roster next year.

bad luck for him but, likely good for New York. Dude showed nothing in summer league, couldn't hit the broadside of a barn.
the fact that you can't even have an unrelated thread without some tool here bringing him up make me think that rational minds are few and far between. Bunch of emotionally weak, angst riddled people. I mean, how many times can you argue the same shyt

Not necessarily 1 year, but definitely longer than a couple months. Take a look at Chris Paul's career numbers, http://espn.go.com/nba/player/stats/_/id/2779/chris-paul; he returned two months after his injury, which is insanely quick, and he hasn't been the same player since. Lin was hurt at the end of March but, if I remember correctly, they put off surgery for a while. Right now his recovery time is probably a little under 6 months and he wouldn't have been able to work out much so he still needs to get back into playing shape. The other thing I've always heard about knee injuries in athletes is that it takes time for them to trust their knee again. They're too afraid to put cut, run, or put their full weight on their knee so that increases recovery time.

Didn't Starks career start with his getting hurt just before he was cut? Could the Knicks retain him without giving up a roster spot?

CrushAlot - Good point. I'm not sure on the rule exactly but I believe for severe injuries they can open up a roster spot for the injured player. So maybe they retain Smith as a favor. It sure looks suspicious though.

pretty sure the rules have changed since then. When Starks got injured, they "couldn't" cut him because of the rules back then.

this avoids an awkward situation in having to cut him and pissing JR off. We don't need psycho JR here and between Woodson insisting that he won't start, and cutting his brother..

What exactly was Starks Knee injury? Patella? I want to try to compare it to Iman having his injury so early in his career. Starks was able to go on to have a long career without major injury
