Hey now! Whilst I was dining (which seems to be the time for Knicks news to break these days), Howard Beck twat that the Knicks had signed Northwestern product/guest KTP subject/overall hilarious human being John Shurna. Look:

Knicks have signed forward John Shurna of Northwestern. One-year deal, partial guarantee.

Shurna, as we learned in Rodger's pre-draft post about him, is the owner of a hideous yet frighteningly effective jump shot, an unkempt and perpetually giggly countenance, and little else in the way of NBA skills. We know as well as anybody, though, that an effective outside shot alone can earn you NBA minutes.

I've never really understood what a "partial guarantee" is, but Shurna is, by my count, the 16th player the Knicks have under contract (double check me on that). If he plays well in camp and makes the cut, he's a likely candidate to end up in Erie with the BayHawks, playing under...we're not sure. Not Patrick Ewing.

He apparently struggled in the summer league. Also is a college 3 point champ like Novak.

The dude creates space with his shot because he can put it on the floor, and can shoot through contact as well.

If Marion isn't getting blocked this kid wont either.

besides its a training camp invite, might not even make it.

I'm just glad their looking at dudes that aren't all over 34.

Thought of him as Novak clone. I'm happy to have him. He blew up in college this year and I think he'll find his way.

Not when he shoots though, he doesn't use his max vertical to shoot.

Your right. Looks like Marion barely gets air on his jumper.

John Shurna looks decent but I dont see him getting any burn this year.

That release is almost exactly the same as Jason Kidd! If he can get his shot off then so can this kid. It's about playing inside out. If STAT is in the post, you need shooters around him and that's really going to create open looks. We'll be adding an inside game to force defenses to collapse fully. The style is a bit different than the SSOL approach to creating open 3's, but it's still effective. It's more like the way the Spurs do it with Duncan. The key is going inside 1st and forcing teams to choose. Do they wanna die quick with 3's or by a thousand cuts by high % post ups.

Overall it suggests that the Knicks are aware they don't have a lot of perimeter shooting. This would also give Woody so much flexibility. MDA loved to have the stretch 4 and for good reason. You want to create space for Melo or STAT, then you must have shooters to surround them. Think about late end of qtr or end game situations where you can go with an offensive unit to get that big shot and then switch to a defensive unit to close out the game. Just a lot of options and matchup possibilities.

I've some games of his. His game is that three ball, and he rarely shoots college threes, his are legit nba range.

Don't if he'll make the cut, but I hope he gets at least stashed in Erie.

If it works out cool, another stretch 4. If not, it's partially-guaranteed so no harm.

It will be interesting to see him get that three off with a long, quality defender on him almost every night. Not college zones trying to react.

Dorky Gallo part Deux.

His shot isn't slow like Gallo's jumper is, and the kid shot the ball from NBA range, hardly near the college line.

My question to you is.....who big man is gonna come all the way out to the 3pt line to challenge the shot?

Keep in mind he isn't Novak, he can fake and get his shot off in contact, plus he will drive.

+1

Thinking the same thing, his shot looked almost horizontal at times. I like the angle he takes to the rim but I get the feeling that the faster defenders he would face in the NBA wouldn't give it to him often.

My question to you is, how big of an NBA-quality big man do you need to block or bother a shot that someone shoots from directly in front of their face?

My other question to you is, how does Northwestern's foes stack up defensively night in and night out against even scrubs in the NBA?

Watch the film. He's shooting open threes against zones. That probably works well in Robbie Benson movies, but not in the NBA...

He shoots way beyond the arc, no bigs will go out that far, plus the kid can put the ball on the floor, and has a quick release.

He also has a fake to dupe his defender.

Who cares who his comp was, he's not gonna get burn against the NBA elite.

He'll play against the opponents bench.
