I watched the Hall of Fame ceremony last night and I have to say; Ralph Sampson and Jamal Wilkes have no business being inducted. Not trying to take away from a great day in their lives, but to me, the Hall of Fame should be reserved for players who are from another planet and, or, great winners. Guys like Wilt, Big O, Magic, MJ, Dr. J. Kareem, Bird, West, Russell, Barry, Barkley, Hakeem, Moses, etc...

I'm old enough to remember Sampson when he played at Virginia and the incredible Hype that surrounded him. He was billed as the next great big man. He's certainly deserving of the College Hall of fame, but he never lived up to the promise when he entered the NBA.

Sampsons first 3 years in the league, his numbers were as follows:
21pts, 11 rbs 2blks
22pts 10 rbs 2blks
19pts 11rbs 2blks

He never averaged more than 15 pts per for the rest of his injury riddled career and topped 10 rbs 1 more time. His career averages are 15pts 8 rbs and 1.6 blks. Yes he messed up his knees pretty bad but injuries are apart of the game. Cant project what a player might have been if he wasn't injured because if thats the case, Bernard King should be in right now and Mattingly should be in the baseball hall of fame.

Wilkes, was a good player but not a Hall Of Famer, either. But over the years, they have been letting in a bunch of boarder line players so that has opened up the debate to let others in. Bill Walton is another player who I dont think should be in the NBA Hall of Fame. College Hall of Fame, absolutely. NBA Hall of Fame, no. Injuries, I believe should have robbed him of his spot.

I agree with this assesment. Sampson has no business being in the NBA hall of fame.

The Hall of Fame is for all of basketball, not just the NBA. So what someone accomplished in college can matter.

I agree with this assesment. Sampson has no business being in the NBA hall of fame. Jamal Wilks too just because he was on the Lakers on another team he would not have looked so good.

Actually there is a Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City Missouri. Kareem, David Thompson, Walton and other great college bb players are there. So essentially, Walton has been inducted twice, once in the collegiate and NBA. NBA Hall of Fame has/or should not have anything to do with Collegiate achievements. If this is the case, David Thompson should also be in the NBA Hall of Fame.

I agree about Sampson. Its like they're saying that he would have put up HOF numbers if he hadn't been chronically injured, shouldn't work that way. I can't stand Bill Walton, worst color commentator ever. Someone once joked that the mute button was invented for him. And the same applies to Walton as well as far as injuries. Both great players but not deserving IMO.

the only Hall of Fame that really protects its integrity by being really selective is the baseball Hall. But other sports are becoming more strict with their admissions criteria. look at the NFL... Bill Parcells didn't make it in his first year of eligibility. That was somewhat shocking.

Anyway, i agree with your assessment completely

limpidgimp is right, there is no NBA Hall of Fame. There is a collegiate basketball hall of fame that's limited to College but this one is the Basketball Hall of Fame. It isn't limited to people from the NBA specifically or professional basketball in general which is why there are so many college basketball coaches that have been inducted.

I've never been but do they at least make it clear that you're in only for college performance? I ask because one could make the legitimate argument that no one individual has made greater contribution to basketball in the last quarter century+ than Yao Ming. but I don't think that's the type of thing that should be on par with the MJs of the world

I don't know, I've never been. I would imagine that their biography would mostly concentrate on their college career if that's why they were inducted.
