A winning team with likable players, a supportive owner, a great game experience and cheap tickets -- is that too much to ask? Not if you're rooting for the Oklahoma City Thunder, who top our 10th annual ranking of pro franchises.

The eight major categories that make up the Ultimate Standings were created based on feedback from fans about what they want most from their favorite teams (click here for a more detailed account of the method to our madness.) The categories:

Bang For The Buck (BNG): Wins during the past three years (regular season plus postseason) per revenues directly from fans, adjusted for league schedules.

Fan Relations (FRL): Openness and consideration toward fans by players, coaches and management.

Ownership (OWN): Honesty and loyalty to core players and local community.

Affordability (AFF): Price of tickets, parking and concessions.

Stadium Experience (STX): Quality of arena and game-day promotions as well as friendliness of environment.

Players (PLA): Effort on the field and likability off it.

Coaching (CCH): Strength of on-field leadership.

Title Track (TTR): Championships already won or expected in the lifetime of current fans.

Below you will find a sortable table of this year's Ultimate Standings as well as previous results going back to 2003. Subcategories that make up the overall ranking for that category are available for the 2009-12 results.

Financial analysis by the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center at the University of Oregon (Matthew Maxson with Ameer Abdelaaty, Mike DeMartini, Jenny Swaim, Gary Wang, Jay Young and Bill Zachry). Fan surveys by Maddock Douglas and NetReflector.

I still don't get why some are so shocked and appalled when New England-based ESPN constantly buries New York teams.

Anyhow, here's their explanation - whether you view as fair or not is up to you.

No. 113: New York Knicks

Last year's rank: 109
Title track: 97
Ownership: 98
Coaching: 83
Players: 105
Fan relations: 108
Affordability: 118
Stadium experience: 45
Bang for the buck: 112

You want us to talk about Linsanity? The renewed Garden buzz, the back-to-back Sports Illustrated covers, the hot-cakes jersey sales (second to Chicago's Derrick Rose), the tales of rising (and falling) MSG market capitalization? Well, our rankings reflect the flip side, the Linless New York Knicks: overpriced, underperforming, generally unappealing (see the 24-spot dip in the players category and 22-spot dive in fan relations). With the Nets heading to Brooklyn this season, there will be that much more pressure on the Knicks to meet expectations, though it's hard to say exactly what those expectations should be these days. When your team leads the league in average ticket price ($117.47, nearly $20 more than the No. 2 Lakers charge) and beer price ($9.50 for 22 ounces, twice as much as the league's cheapest brewski in Denver), folks tend to get restless sooner rather than later. Knicks fans are resigned to hoping that Carmelo Anthony can use his Olympic performance to reignite his career. Because with an aging Amare Stoudemire and a shaky Raymond Felton, at this point they're going to need Melo to do his share of team carrying, hero ball or not.

It's absolutely fair. Everything from the tickets to the drinks are ridiculously overpriced. Also, before Linsanity last season no one wanted to go to a game; I had tickets to games I couldn't go to and could barely give them away because we were so bad and boring.

Now the joy of my world is in Zion How beautiful if nothing more Than to wait at Zion's door I've never been in love like this before Now let me pray to keep you from The perils that will surely come

Still higher than the Red Sox. Stats have to be a little biased to the extent that it allows "expected championships" to be calculated in the same line item as actual championships won, particularly those won within the last decade.

Looks a bit high to me... should be The worst team in pro sport but Arena is good and Linsanity helped a bit.
And deservigly so. Dolan should get what he deserves. And fans to - for supporting this calamity.

How can ESPN simultaneously be the biased New England Station and put the Red Sox at 117?

I didn't say they loved Boston teams. I said they don't look at New York teams in very high regard - no matter how well they perform.

Well the C's and Pats are #20 and #22 respectively in that list.
