The wife took me and my boys last night for my birthday. Clyde, one of my childhood heroes, was there looking fit and cool as ever in a purple suit and came by to chat, making the rounds. I was totally starstruck, but did manage the semblance of a legitimate conversation.
On the current Knicks: He says he likes the roster ... on paper. "They need to play as a team and need to play D." Nothing earth-shattering there. I said you gotta like Chandler's D, and he said, "Sure, but he's got to look for his shot. He doesn't even look." I asked him what his nickname for Kurt will be. He laughed, thought a minute, and said, "Geriatric. Him and Kid and Camby."
Re: The old Knicks, I asked if he still hates the Lakers. He said not as much as the Celtics, which surprised me. And I asked if Phil Chenier was as dirty a player as he seemed on TV. He was circumspect, "Chenier always got up to play me."
If you're a big Clyde fan, you should check the place out. He said he's there 4 or 5 nights a week. It would suck to show up on one of the 2 or 3 he's not there, of course. The food isn't anything special -- but not bad though, and not particularly overpriced for Manhattan.
