To learn about past trades and what was given up at the time.

http://www.prosportstransactions.com/basketball/Search/Search.php

between that and baskeball reference.com I saw:

1972 John Gianelli drafted
1976 traded with cash to Buffalo for Bob McAdoo
1979 Mcadoo traded to Celtics for no. 3 pick Bill Cartwright
1988 Charles Oakley, 1988 first round pick (#19-Rod Strickland), 1988 third round pick (#69-Phil Stinnie) Bill Cartwright, 1988 first round pick (#11-Will Perdue), 1988 third round pick (#62-Derrick Lewis)
1999 Oak for Camby
2002 Marcus Camby, Mark Jackson, rights to Nene / Nene Hilario / Maybyner Hilario Antonio McDyess, rights to Frank Williams, 2003 second round pick (#30-Maciej Lampe)

Amazing 30 year span for the Gianelli pick and cash and that led to Dice.

If we kept Camby or made a lasting trade for him at full value when he got healthy and hit his stride, the asset could have lasted 40 years.

Great site to save and revisit history more accurate.

This is awesome, I've been trying to find something like this forever.
Now the joy of my world is in Zion How beautiful if nothing more Than to wait at Zion's door I've never been in love like this before Now let me pray to keep you from The perils that will surely come

looks there were other considerations........"cash (not per 80-81NBA Register) settlement of Nets indemnity agreement with Knicks"

Nets owed Knicks $6,000,000 for coming into NY. They offered Dr. J but knicks wanted money. Dr J. at the time was a huge star and he played longer than most expected because he did have knee problems in his mid 20's and it was thought if he lost the abilty to fly he would not be as effective.

MIcheal Ray (4th overal) had an amazing rookie year and he was considered to be an even better player than Magic Johnson! His personal problems are legendary but this guy was a star player! I don't know how much cash the Knicks got in this trasaction but my guess them getting the better of the trade was part of a reduced monetary consideration owed them.
