Nets market their 'Core Four'
By Mike Mazzeo
Special to ESPNNewYork.com

NEW YORK -- The Brooklyn Nets are introducing their fans to the "Core Four."
The Nets unveiled a "Hello Brooklyn" marketing campaign featuring Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Brook Lopez and Gerald Wallace on Monday in their new borough.

The campaign features advertisements of the stars, along with a personalized message that "enables fans to learn more about their hometown team," according to a press release.
"We are delighted to continue building a connection between Brooklynites and the players on their new home team," Nets CEO Brett Yormark said in a statement. "This phase of the 'Hello Brooklyn' campaign is a creative way for the players to share something about themselves in advance of their debut at Barclays Center this fall.

"It's clear from the big crowd at our recent public celebration at Borough Hall Plaza, as well as our successful ticket and merchandise sales, that the borough is excited for their Brooklyn Nets. We're thrilled to be part of the community as we get ready for opening night."

Examples of the ads include:

• "Hello Brooklyn. I'm #8, Deron Williams, three-time NBA All-Star and father of four."

• "Hello Brooklyn, I'm #7, Joe Johnson, six-time NBA All-Star and lifelong Razorback."

• "Hello Brooklyn, I'm #11, Brook Lopez, 20-point scorer and Batman's biggest fan."

• "Hello Brooklyn, I'm #45, Gerald Wallace, All-NBA Defender and offseason fisherman."

Billboards will also be put up at the following locations (among others): on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway; by the Manhattan Bridge; Atlantic Avenue and Eastern Parkway; Kings Highway and Utica Avenue; 86th Street and 4th Avenue; and Surf Avenue.
The campaign will also include digital and social media components and "subway station domination signage" -- which begins in August.

The "Hello Brooklyn" marketing campaign is the second phase of a three-part campaign before the team begins playing in the $1 billion Barclays Center. The campaign began when the Nets unveiled their new brand identity -- including their new logo and color scheme -- on April 30.
"This one now is the launch, just, as I like to say, 'Putting the face to the name,'" Nets chief marketing officer Fred Mangione said. "Now that we know what our team looks like, and we made all the signings, basketball operations did what they needed to do to put a great team on the court, and we're now putting names to the faces where the borough will have a chance to get excited about this new team in their area."
The Nets will now be battling the New York Knicks for the allegiances of fans in the metropolitan area.

"Our goal is to own Brooklyn," Mangione said. "We want to turn the Brooklyn Nets into a global brand, so it's not just in the tri-state area, but it's globally and internationally. But we try not to get caught up in (Nets vs. Knicks). We leave that to the fans and the writers to get into that.
"We have a long ways to go. We have to win some ballgames and we have to get the people in the market excited about us, and we think this is the first step towards it."
Since Williams tweeted that he was staying with the Nets on July 3, the team has sold more than 2,500 full season tickets, according to a team spokesman.

In the offseason, Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov has invested over $300 million dollars into the roster -- approximately $287 million of which will go to Williams (five years, $98 million), Johnson (four years, $89 million), Lopez (four years, $60 million) and Wallace (four years, $40 million), assuming they stay throughout the duration of their contracts.

Mike Mazzeo is a regular contributor to ESPNNewYork.com.

Core 4 GTFO with that crap LOL! Can't compare Jeter, Rivera, Pettite, and Posada to these fools. Win 5 chips first, then maybe you can borrow that label. I guess they have to drum up interest somehow for their new arena. Broke Lopez biggest fan of Batman is the stupidest thing I've ever seen.

• "Hello Brooklyn. I'm #8, Deron Williams, three-time NBA All-Star and arguably the best PG in the league."

• "Hello Brooklyn, I'm #7, Joe Johnson, six-time NBA All-Star and I have the worst contract in the NBA."

• "Hello Brooklyn, I'm #11, Brook Lopez, 20-point scorer and I'm afraid to rebound."

• "Hello Brooklyn, I'm #45, Gerald Wallace, All-NBA Defender and decent player but nothing to write home about."

the nets are acting like the jets. They are proclaiming themselves to be champs already. I mean they have one guy who i would call an elite point guard. Joe Johnson is a good player not not like a wade/westbrook and he is a lot older making a lot of money. Gerald Wallace had one good year and Brooks Lopez can score but cant rebound or defend

Let's worry about the Knicks and keep something in perspective.

The past 12 years
Nets 432 wins 43 playoff victories
Knicks 408 wins 3 playoff victories

Aside from stating the obvious here, we struggled to beat the Nets every time we played them last year, we improved but they improved more with Johnson, a healthy Lopez and some added bench depth.

The Knicks are and will be a ****ing embarrassment till they accomplish something. We have guys like Melo and Amare who always talk tough, but then forget to play defense, pass the ball come in out of shape. So until we win something like a ****ing championship we are still one of the worst oganization in the NBA. Winning one playoff game and celebrating like it's an accomplishment is disgraceful. This team should be right at the top of the conference, but we make excuses as fans, the players have excuses, ownership has excuses.

The Giants actually are one of the top franchises in the league and have won titles in the 80's 90's and 2000's. The Knicks can't make that claim. It's one of the big reasons our team often follows our owners lead. Being concerned with what's happening with other teams or what the newspapers are writing instead of taking care of the house.

"Core Four"??? LMAOOO They're featuring BrokeFoot Lopez and Jheri Curl Wallace? Too damned funny. These "Nets fans" get themselves quickly embarrassed when they try to puff up their chest around me. I've had to air a few of those flip-flopping, fickle, wannabe Nets fans / Knicks haters during those basketball chats at the barbershop (located only a few blocks away from that abomination Barclays Center) recently.

The Nets can be the convenient team for Knicks haters to run to. All that team is the same crew who piled up losses last season plus Joe Johnson. Now, all of a sudden they are some "feared" team? GTFO... hahaha... They'll never rule this city, and will ALWAYS be second place 'round here, despite how heavily they market that team. KNICKS 4 LIFE.

Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

It'd be sick if the Yankees stepped in and told them to pump the brakes on using that name. Shit's an insult.

We're in a different period right now. Thorn isn't running the Nets, and Kidd is now a Knick. We may still have an ******* for an owner, but if you can't admit Grunwald is doing everything in his power to make the Knicks a contender, then you have your hater blinders on. Knicks will forever be the one of the iconic franchises in the NBA and in New York, as long as, MSG is still on broadway, as long as Ewing, Debusschere, Clyde, and Reed jerseys are in the rafters, as long as team colors remain the traditional Blue and Orange.

The Knicks are iconic for one reason, New York. It has nothing to do with their history or lack there of. Broadway, college basketball, pickup hoops is where the city gets it's lifeblood from.

The Lakers are good every where, Boston wins and rebuilds and wins again, The Spurs have used late round picks to rebuild their team, Pat Riley has made an expansion franchise more relevant than the Knicks year after year.

It's not hating it's fact.

Eddy Curry, Stephon Marbury, Isiah Thomas, those are the Knicks until this group accomplishes something. A trash franchise that has behaved embarrassing over the past 12 years.

you call the Knicks an embarrassment but, the Nets get a pass for sucking ass for decades, and for only being good for JASON KIDD'S tenure is not something to be proud of either. We have had our ups and down and right now we are on an up-swing regardless of what happened to the guy who is no longer a Knikc. To call this team an embarrassment makes me wonder about your fandom. Call management an embarrassment but, please don't say that about my Knicks because, the guys we have on the squad have and will play their asses off for us.

Sure, they had a good run with Kidd but, what have they done since other than lose out in free agency. You want to compare the last 12, how about the last 20years of suckass for Jersey. You don't get props for being a short "blip" on the radar screen. And you definitely to get props for not having any championships, no matter how long ago they were.

How suckass is it for them to open a new arena without a single championship banner to go along with it. With Brook Lopez as one of your draws.

I think one thing they forgot to advertise, and I mean it to be in the simplest business sense. Attack the Knicks owner Jimmy Dolan. Yes I hate him, but that's not why I'm mentioning this. As a Nets owner, I would've attacked Jimmy Dolan because I need to steal NY fan base. Many of the Knicks fans are bandwagons or because there's no other New York teams. Jimmy is already being recognized around the league as a clown owner that only Isiah Thomas respects, and so attacking Jimmy wouldn't cost much and they won't be playing at same stadium either. Especially around this time, they can definitely grab the market and hope the fans will root for the return of Nets. Obviously the business side will be a bit more work as most business deals have been conducted at MSG. However, things can change once Nets make more money with the fan base. I'm not saying they should stoop so low and destroy Jimmy, but at least let the New York folks feel that they have a right to claim as the better New York team. Core 4 is a start, but I think it's relatively weak at this point consider they aren't stirring up the anger many Knicks fans are towards Jimmy. A survey already indicated 1/4 would leave for another team. They need to be aggressive to get those 1/4 at least...

He didn't give the Nets a pass, he said they have been better than us over the last 12 years which they have despite a couple of 17 win seasons. I completely agree with MS, the Knicks have been complete garbage since JVG. We have had our stars that are all talk, low effort and no results. While some of you like to win a 1-4 playoff record like a badge of honor, others actually want more.

TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

The Knicks are a founding NBA franchise, and one of the only still in their original city, playing atop the ruins of Penn Station in the self-proclaimed "World's Most Famous Arena."

The Nets are founding ABA club that sold their star player Dr. J to join the league as the New York-metro's also-ran, bouncing around from Nassau County to the swamp to the bricks, and now got their own sweetheart arena deal.

So the competition shouldn't be fair. But we are about to commemorate 40 years since the last league championship banner.

And now they might be ready to make a Brighton Beach community pick in AK47:

This is a battle for the hearts and minds of the next generation...

Prokhorov is one of Russia's richest men. I don't think he'd go directly at Dolan, after all: the NBA *is* the owners. Dolan and the Prok are both competitors and cooperators. But definitely with Jay-Z in the ownership group, and his deep pockets, he can both outspend and present a more hip and appealing face to the front office. But it can come off cheesy too:

Much smarter: focus on the players, the team, the new look, the BK pride, the shining new basketball-specific arena being built...
