Who knows what happens tonight. If Lin signs the only difference is that next year we have to find SEVEN guys for the minimum instead of eight to fill out the roster. For those who are sick of talking about that here it is as a google doc spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ah-E78OjehAYdHVadWJxUzBPS25Sai1PR3R4NWN5UkE

Here it is broken down:

Year 1 salary: $75M (rounded up) WITHOUT LIN: committed to 12 players
Year 2 salary: $74M again w/out Lin committed to 8 players
Year 3 salary: $79 M again w/out Lin committed to 8 players

In each of these years we are WAY over the $58M cap, the $70M luxury tax line and the $74M "apron"

WTF does this mean you ask?

In all 3 of those years we can ONLY fill out the roster with vet min guys, rookies, and I THINK maybe we get to use ONE mid level exception to sign a guy for $3M unless using it on Kidd this year means we lost it the next 3.

So I guess get familiar with the D-League, College, Europe and the bench players for other teams, vets willing to play for the min. and chase a ring with the Knicks.

Let's try to elevate the level of discourse in this byeetch. Please

so there are no players we miss out on. Just money, which MSG can only blame on themselves for publicly spouting they will match any offers. Thanks for being clear.

yeah. I mean all this debate could be moot because even with Lin we may not ever be able to fill out the roster to build a championship level roster to beat an OKC/Chicago/Miami level team.

I dunno if teams should be trying to emulate Miami's approach because Pat Riley somehow got Lebron/Wade/Bosh to only take $17M each. He got Miller/Battier to take less than what they could have got elsewhere. Same with Ray Allen.

I mean who else could've placed 5 rings in a bag and put it in front of Lebron and an owner like Mickey Arison who basically spends like Dolan without all the extra crap?

Phil Jackson has the rings but I can't see him pleading with a player to please come to his team and play for less $. His teams were put together by skilled GMs who also go somewhat lucky. Krause should have gone to jail for how much Pippen was underpaid (easily maxed out today right?) and Kupchak got Kobe for an aging Vlade, Shaq forcing his way there to live that LA life, the Pau Gasol gift, etc.

The optimist in me says with or without Lin: Amare/Tyson's lessons with Hakeem pay off and we either win a chip with them or we manage to trade one of them for an elite PG. I don't think we need an elite wing since Melo is already an elite scoring wing. Makes more sense to pour $ into PG/SF/C combo than SF/PF/C combo.

great post. this is correct.

i do believe the knicks can use the $3M mini MLE in every off-season.

they also have a first round pick in 2013 and 2015 that they can't trade! a rarity!
