Jeremy still wants to come back By MARC BERMAN Last Updated: 2:42 AM, July 16, 2012 LAS VEGAS — Though he sure didn’t act like it, Jeremy Lin still wants to be a Knick.

A Lin confidant, contacted yesterday, was asked whether Lin wanted the Knicks to match the Rockets’ revised $25 million offer sheet.

“Yes, he does,’’ the person said.

Lin’s high school coach made it sound that way, too.

“He did not see this happening,” Peter Diepenbrock, Lin’s coach at Palo Alto (Calif.) High School, told Yahoo! Sports. “He sounded surprised. He loves the New York fans. To have the experience that he had for the two months and for that to be over with, that’s quite a shock to the system. I think he really believed the Knicks would match whatever offer he got.”

He should have been prepared not to come back - when you make a move like he did you always need to be prepared for the worst case scenario. For him to assume the Knicks would match anything he signed is ridiculous.

They balk now because he actually may have used them matching in good faith as leverage for a higher deal. If this was the original deal, I bet they match with little argument.

yes, of course, he majored in naivete at Harvard.

Economics my friends, pure economics.

You always sell high, and Lin's not getting any higher than those magical weeks we witnessed.

If the market's going to pay him $25 mil, good for him.

Just please don't buy into the pathetic team loyalty crap. Nobody should be that stupid.

This bothered me at first, because I figured he was the last piece we needed to go to war; now we have Raymond Felton.

Which, at least, apparently won't create the flak with JR Smith that a $25 million dollar Lin was going to cause.

But here's the fact. The Knicks never once matched any deal. They just let it drag on and on and on.. and still dragging...

They never matched the original agreed upon deal becasue it wasnt delivered. Lin was busy redoing it so the Knicks wouldnt match or being greedy 1 or the other. I really dont think he is greedy im just using the words that are labeled on Melo all the time when LIN is doing the exact same thing

And, again, as I point out, if the worst case scenario happens and Lin is somehow a huge bomb (which is unlikely, as some poster suggested that a reasonable expectation for Lin next season was a “Top 15 point guard in the NBA,” so I’ll go with that as a reasonable expectation for Lin) and the Knicks can’t get out from under the last year of the deal before the final year, then they can always waive him and have that $15 million spread out over three years, thereby eliminating the luxury tax problem in its entirety.

Therefore, there is no real economic risk here, luxury tax-wise, and a substantial slam on the team itself from an on-the-court perspective. Not matching would be idiotic.

exactly. the original deal was not made official, and the rockets are trying to game us. lin figures the knicks would match whatever he gets, so he signs.

Wow, you really don't hide your hatred against Lin. You have to create thread after thread to bash on the guy. What did he do to you? C'mon let it all out.

What deal were they supposed to match? The most they could offer was 3 or 4 years $24 mil. Were they supposed to officially match the "verbal" offer sheet that no one can agree on if it is binding or not?

Yup. The Knicks can't match any offers until it physically arrives at the New York Knicks office(league rules). The first offer would've have most definitely been signed, and the Raymond Felton/KT deal probably doesn't happen. Instead Lin, his agent, and Daryl Morey renegotiated from the 4 year the Knicks were willing to sign, to the 3 year deal, which is hard for any capped out team in the league to sign. He went back to Houston without notifying the Knicks, who were waiting for the first offer to arrive, then they were backdoored by surprise. Even if the Knicks made the first official offer to Lin, it would be way way lower. Who's to say Lin doesn't feeled "lowballed" if Knicks do this?

yes.. officially match the verbal offer. That will show 2 things: 1) They desire Lin to continue to be a Knicks 2) shut every other team's mouth and stop trying to get Lin. Knicks staff already knew Jeremy Lin will bring them lots of money with the Asian market, period. If Houston mouthed that deal publicly, then Knicks should've just play their cards right away and so Lin won't have to think twice about what's better financially for him. If I'm selling my car to Jack and someone else offers Jack the better deal but Jack will have to take the bus over there, I'd pull Jack to the side right away and ask him, "Hey, do you have cash? If so, I can sell you my car right here with that same deal that other person offered.." most likely Jack will take my deal and shake hands on it. You jump on getting a guaranteed golden goose, not toying with it and see if anyone else wants to jump on the deals.

Needs to be done on paper, and by the time Knicks received late Saturday night, Lin and Morey changed the terms to the one the Knicks were ready to resign Lin with.

Actually they did what you said. They told Lin they were gonna match. Every Knick employee said they were gonna match. But you can't officially match a verbal offer. You have to have signed paperwork. What you are suggesting is impossible for them to do.
