Well thats a no brainer if we can give him the MLE ---hes the type of guy we wouldve got in the early 90's. He might not be in his prime but hes still very good. He can play the third big and if Amare or Chandler gets hurt--we dont lose anything. Id go hard here--this makes a ton of sense. Having a frontcourt of Amare Chandler and Brand would be tough to contend with---I will cross my fingers

Yeah, I saw this too. Hope we can get him.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

I said this in another thread - he could help inspire Amar'e to learn how to rebound when he is watching Brand from the bench in the fourth quarter

I'd go for it. I agree that Brand would be valuable as insurance if one of our bigs go down. It would be added motivation for them to produce knowing that Brand is waiting in the wings.

Doubt he clears waivers, but if he does he'll probably sign with a contender for the vet minimum. I doubt it will be us though.

What teams have 18M in cap space to claim him...and want him?

Nobody is going to pay Brand that much money when you can get him for the vet min if you wait a little.

who's picking up 18 million???....when he's waived a team has to pay a percentage.....someone correct me if I'm wrong.

What happened when we amnestied Chauncey? Didn't the Clippers have to take on some of the deal?

Didn't he get amnestied? The 76ers have to pay the $18M he's owed, we just pay him the vet min ala Baron Davis(Cleveland's amnesty).

I don't think so. Knicks paid the money minus the vet min that Clips were paying him.

If a team claims him they take on his salary. If he clears waivers, Philly is responsible.

I am not quite sure how the amnesty process works for acquiring players. Is there an order for who gets to bid similar to waivers or is it just the highest bidder? Also, does anyone know how soon the bidding process would occur? Brand would be a great pick up. Hopefully Grunwald can negotiate a sign and trade with Dallas.

Brand is nice at the Vet min.

Philly also signed Nick Young while Lou Williams remains a uFA. I think NY should make a run at him and make him the starting SG.

Hmmm...actually you may be correct here. I think I misspoke earlier. Teams can bid on the players and the highest bidder wins (must have cap room). Good catch.

The Philadelphia 76ers have used the amnesty clause to alleviate themselves of the final year (and $18M) of Elton Brand's contract.

Brand's services will now be up for auction to the other NBA teams. The 76ers still have to pay his salary, but it won't count against the salary cap, giving them extra space to spend that money elsewhere.

Brand averaged 11 points and 7 rebounds a game for the 76ers last season.

If a team bids on him in the auction, the 76ers will only be responsible for the difference between that $18M and his new salary.

In other words, if a team bids $10M on Brand, they will pay him that money, and the 76ers will pay him $8M to equal $18M total.

If he clears waivers without receiving any bids at all, which is highly unlikely, Brand will then be a free agent. In that case, the 76ers would have to pay him the entire $18M, regardless of what deal he reaches with a new team.

This was done solely for the cap space, and the 76ers have already started taking advantage of it, signing Nick Young to a 1-year deal worth $6M.

So basically the amnesty wire favors under the cap teams, so the highest bidder will take on part not all of his salary. If he clears amnesty wire with no takers, then he enters free agency and Brand can pick his team.

These nba rules are retarded but lets hope the Knicks can make a play with some of the guys left out there....

Brand behind Amare and Chandler is my dream. Brand is not the 20/10 guy anymore....he was 11/7 last year....that's what the Knicks need off the bench. Jort's can probably do the same thing though.

This would be a no brainier. Knicks need the insurance to Amare.

As with any other waived player, teams must continue to pay the guaranteed base salary of their amnestied players.

Also as with any other waived player, another team may place a waiver claim in order to acquire the player before he clears waivers (see question number 63). But amnesty is different from the normal waiver process in that it allows teams to make either a full or partial waiver claim. When a team makes a full waiver claim it acquires the player, assumes his full contract, and pays all remaining salary obligations (and the waiving team has no further salary obligation to the player). Full waiver claims have precedence over partial waiver claims -- if one team makes a full waiver claim and another makes a partial waiver claim, the team making the full waiver claim is awarded the player. If multiple teams make full waiver claims, the player is awarded to the team with the worst record.

A partial waiver claim is a bid for a single dollar amount. If no team makes a full waiver claim, the player is awarded to the team submitting the highest bid in a partial waiver claim. If multiple teams bid the same amount, the player is awarded to the team with the worst record. When a team is awarded a player via a partial waiver claim, it pays the following portion of the player's salary:

- The amount of their bid, spread pro rata across all remaining guaranteed years of the player's contract
- All non-base compensation, such as bonuses
- 100% of the player's salary in non-guaranteed seasons
