So lets say that we need to match Lin's PP contract, can someone explain how that messes up our cap and what we (actually) have left to spend?

Lin = 40 million (5, 5, 15, 15) ...

Can we just go above the apron those last 2 years and pay the luxury tax? Who cares since Lin is a "CASH COW"? Hopefully, he is not a Dry Bull, Dead Dog or a White Elephant at that point.

The last year is actually pretty irrelevant since he becomes a commodity with a high expiring, no??

I don't get how it really works either. Especially the part where the team that initially offers the poison pill contract can then go and average the amount of the contract over the number of years

my understanding is that the knicks don't incur the apron unless they use the full $5M MLE. if they use only the mini $3M MLE, they can go over the cap as much as they want to pay their own guys, but they have to pay luxury tax, which goes much higher after next season.

also, the max contract Lin can be offered by any team is 4yr/$36M. numerous places have reported this. knicks will match in any case.

so basically, if Dolan is willing to pay it, it becomes a "who gives a sh1t how much the contract is for"?

for lin? yeah. knicks are over the cap for the next three years thanks to amare/melo/tyson anyway.

you don't let lin walk for a few million. he'll make that up in jersey sales/tv ratings and international tv deals in asia. and then some.

lin is one of the few unproven guys you can overpay.

look, there's a reason houston is the team to offer lin a huge deal. they know what it means money-wise to have the team be a big deal in asia. i read at one point that lin could earn the knicks $500 million in international marketing and tv deals. you really think they're going to not match a deal that is an average of $9M per year as opposed to the maybe $6M his stats are worth? this is the new york knicks and this is big business. lin will be a knick. for better or for worse.

aw, i feel bad for them. that doesn't affect the knicks ability to match any offer for lin in the slightest. the knicks will match lin.

most likely scenario right now is lin and kidd as knicks, which is a huge upgrade over last season.

The talk is 30 million for 4 years. That's overpaying by maybe 5 million. Not too bad a deal. 40 Million would be insane, but I would still match. I could care less about Dolan's money.
