Knicks fans remember Randy Foye's big fourth quarter against the Knicks on Feb. 9, 2011, scoring 17 points to lead the Clippers to the 116-108 victory. He also went off on the Knicks this year, scoring 28 points on April 25, but this time the Clippers fell short, 99-93.

Foye, a Newark native who attended East Side High, has always played well at Madison Square Garden -- even dating back to his days at Villanova when he played there during a couple of Big East tournaments.

During the second half of the season, Clippers PG Randy Foye led the league in 3-pointers.Now, heading into free agency, which starts July 1, it's the Garden is on his favorites list, according to a source close to the six-year veteran who's been in Los Angeles the past two seasons.

Foye, an unrestricted free agent, is interested in the Knicks and their mid-level exception of $3 million, which came about based on the early Bird rights ruling.

"He will have multiple offers at that amount and more annually," the source told ESPN New York. "New York would a great fit for both [playing and financial reasons]."

Foye's specialty on the court would boost the Knicks in one of their weakest categories during the 2011-12 campaign: 3-point shooting (33.6 percent). During the second half of the season, Foye made the most 3-pointers in the league, even outdueling Steve Novak by two (87 to 85). While Novak had the highest percentage during that span (48.0), Foye was still lights out at 41.4.

While the Knicks will likely want to use that $3 million on one of the top point guard free agents, Steve Nash, Andre Miller or Raymond Felton. But any of those veterans could demand more than that per year. So that could leave Jason Kidd, who sounds like he's the most willing to accept a veteran's minimum contract and to either be a starter or backup mentor to Jeremy Lin.

Then, the Knicks could also retain Novak using his early Bird rights and re-sign J.R. Smith, who decided not to opt in, to 120 percent of his previous year's salary using a non-Bird exception (around $2.8 million). They could also use a second veteran's minimum of $1.4 million to sign Lamar Odom.

In this scenario, the Knicks will have added one seasoned player in the backcourt (Kidd), one in the frontcourt (Odom) and another 3-pointer to their arsenal: Foye, who can also create off the dribble, play some D and replace Iman Shumpert temporarily at starting shooting guard.

Overall, the starting five would initially include: Lin, Foye, Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler. The bench would feature: Novak, Smith, Odom, Landry Fields (early Bird rights), Jared Jeffries (unrestricted FA) and Josh Harrellson.

In addition to Foye, Ray Allen, Anthony Parker and Mickael Pietrus are other 3-point shooters who could be on the Knicks' radar.

I meantioned Foye yesterday. What a great pickup he would be for the mid-level. Can knock down the 3 and play backup PG as well. Could be a huge win for us.

BUT will he wait around if we have to wait for EBR appeal process when free agency starts? I bet he could get the same dough elsewhere.

He's a NJ guy... this would be a very good fit. Only downside he's not much of a creator, which means the ball will run through Melo which isnt a positive. We need a PG who can run an offense, not hand the ball off to Melo to pound at the elbow while everyone stands and watches.. but as a backup? Pretty good.

I think this is going to be settled. Hahn said that NBA and NBAPA are meeting this week to discuss settlement. It'll be too big of a headache if this issue is in limbo as of 7/1.

I don't like the ball going through Melo either. But if the ball is brought up by Foye, and Smith and Melo create in those sets, it could work for small spurts during a game. But really he's a knock-down 2 and big enough bodywise to make an impact in small lineup situations.

Guess that's where Kidd comes in to backup Lin at the veteran's minimum. I would take Foye, Kidd, and Odom in a heartbeat as they would fit our roster and needs perfectly.

I'm loving this but we run into a similar issue from last season, being overstacked at all positions.
If we win the appeal, keep EBRs, sign Lin,Fields,Novak, re-sign JR... add Foye, Kidd, Odom, this team is tooooooo much. Miami and OKC ran with max 8-man rotations in the finals.

Lin/Kidd
Foye/Smith/Fields/(Shumpert)
Anthony/Novak
Stoudemire/Odom
Chandler/Harrelson

At least one guy has to go in this scenario. I say you let Smith walk, keep Fields because he can stretch to the 3, plays well with Lin, and costs less. Then you pick up a PF/C in the draft at 48. Acy/Gates/Sacre

When Shumpert is healthy, trade someone for a bench role player and a future draft pick. We need more in future drafts due to Melo trade.

God knows it's a pipe dream, but that lineup he laid out in the article is nothing to sneeze at.

You see this is the kinda player you can get for less that half of what jr will get. This guy made more 3's than steve novak. The perfect player to slot in at sg to play along with melo, amare & lin. Cant play jr with those 3 guys ever. And Foye is a local kid. There's hope in the media after all other than pointing out the absurd obvious in getting nash for the mle to sell papers.

Give Foye the LLE & pray Kidd & odom both accept vet min deals and the roster is set to finish 2nd in the east and challenge the Heat. Avoid going over the luxury tax threshold this way

again, im kinda confused...JR turn down his player option...so that means hes coming back to the knicks..for 2.8 mil right?...and we would still have the MLE to sign foye or whoever else right?
Knicks should be improved: win about 40 games and maybe sneak into the playoffs. Melo, Rose and even Noah will have some nice moments however this team should be about PORZINGUS. the sooner they make him the primary player, the better

Yup. We would still have about $3Mill of the MLE to throw at someone, then the LLE and Veteran's minimum also.

perfect!

if thats the case then:

MLE = Foye (could play SG and PG)
LLE = Odom
Mini Vet = Camby

Exactly its been my hope all of season that the Knicks complete the roster with a pg, sg & pf. Kidd & odom and I didn't realize until now Foye is available. He fits at sg better than anyone and isnt 46yrs old like ray allen. Sign me up hopefully the knicks do just that. Very extremely realistic scenario

Seconded. I'm not hoping for Nash anymore, he's still productive and will command more than the $3m we'll offer Foye for sure.

I agree the only stupid aspect of this excellent article is the thought of keeping JR who we cant afford and wont be needed with foye, shump & fields doing the nerdy handshake with Lin and sitting on the end of the bench half dressed.
