You know I really wanted Nash on this team I can't believe he equates money with respect when he's 39 and none of the contenders have money to spend on him only the bad teams have money with the exception of Dallas

3:27 PM, June 25, 2012 ι By MARC BERMAN
While saying he is still “open to everything’’, Steve Nash acknowledged money will be a big factor in his free-agent decision and admitted former coach Mike D’Antoni would have been a plus for the Knicks’ chances of landing him.
The Knicks have neither – a large amount of money to offer nor D’Antoni, making them a longshot. Nash’s coach in Phoenix resigned in March after his feud with Carmelo Anthony.
If Jeremy Lin and Steve Novak have their Bird rights on July 1st, as awarded by an arbitrator, the Knicks will have a mid-level exception to dangle at Nash. However, that mid-level exception could be only $3 million – not $5 million – depending on their payroll size after Lin’s and Novak’s signings.
Either way, Nash is expected to get larger offers, especially from his club, Phoenix. Certainly, a $3 million mid-level offer won’t be competitive.
Appearing on ESPN Radio on Monday to promote his soccer tournament Wednesday in Chinatown, Nash was asked whether winning a title or being compensated financially was more important. Most athletes talk about winning a title as the only driving force but Nash didn’t go down that road.
“I definitely feel I want to be validated monetarily to an extent,’’ Nash said. “It’s still very important. I think money in many ways represents respect. For example, if you sign with a team and take half or less money, six months later they trade you. It has to be one of the factors. It’s not everything but it is important and will be one of the factors involved.’’
Tellingly, Nash did not mention Knicks coach Mike Woodson’s name during the interview. The Post reported last week that a Nash confidant said D’Antoni’s departure had made the Knicks a less serious option for him.
Asked if this were true, Nash said, “I think everyone knows I love Mike. We had some good years together. So it would’ve been kind of another factor in everything. But what’s in the past is the past. Sunday comes around, I’m going to have to look at everything with fresh eyes.’‘
Before Jeremy Lin’s rise and D’Antoni’s departure, Nash to the Knicks seemed a no-brainer. But without his former Phoenix coach and Lin being groomed as the starting point guard and their money situation still unclear as the NBA appeals the union victory on Bird rights, it does not seem the perfect match.
But Nash, a So Ho summer resident, won’t scratch them off the list.
“Yeah, It sounds like a company line but my situation right now is I’m open to anything,’’ Nash said. “I really don’t know until the 1st what concrete opportunties will be there. But I’ll definitely look at every situation comes my way Sunday and not close myself to any opportunities.’’
The Knicks will attempt to sell Nash on the club not being so far away from reigning champion Miami.
“It’s nice to have that idea, I want to win a championship,’’ Nash said. “That’s also difficult. You can turn down a ton of money for a team you think can win a championship and there’s an injury and the chemistry isn’t right and you’re traded in six months. I have to put all the things into the hat.’’

What I get from this is this: Steve Nash, on a multi year low $ deal, that he would be willing to sign with a contender, would be a hot trading commodity. He is absolutely right.

Can't fault Nash who has put in his time, looking to make sure he's well compensated. It doesn't make him greedy, just a good businessman. The guy knows his value.

Bingo Nash will go to the team with the most money, if I remember correctly Dallas wanted to resign Nash in 2004 but he went to Phoenix for more money and at the time they were a lottery team, who knew he would help turn that team around. I guess he doesn't care about winning to each his own I guess , just wanted to see him on the Knicks for selfish reasons.

Hes not coming to nyk...ive been trying to say that for weeks now...dont believe the hype....its just the media trying to get us to read their articles
Knicks should be improved: win about 40 games and maybe sneak into the playoffs. Melo, Rose and even Noah will have some nice moments however this team should be about PORZINGUS. the sooner they make him the primary player, the better

i agree. i have no problem with kidd. i know he is old but we only need 15 minutes and he can still defend, dish, and shoot the occasional 3.

Nash is being practical. I seriously doubt he had any interest in coming here once MDA left. I can't see him wanting to run an ISo only offense for MElo. I am afraid he may end up in Miami or OKC both could use PGs.
TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

this doesn't make nash greedy at all.

nash is saying - if i give someone a discount because i want to play there, what happens when they trade me? now im not playing where i wanted and im not making fair market-value either.

how can you fault him for this?

why would we trade nash. Not having a pg in the playoofs cost us. Having Lin and nash would be hard to top

That can be solved with a no trade clause though. I have a feeling Nash wants a team he can lead and the $$ he deserves. Unless the Knicks really sell him I predict Phoenix, Toronto or Portland.

lol Well I'm dissapointed, he shouldn't use getting traded as a reason nobody is trading Nash especially if you signed him at a discount

Because Nash is Canadian and that's the only Canadian team?

Well he's gotta say he's considering them, so he can have enough bidders to get the price up, no? Also, Bargs + Bayless + Nash with D'Antoni as coach could be fun for him and surprising.

you see how quick he left dallas despite playing with his best friend dirk, and having a better shot at a title with dallas then he ever had with the suns at the time
