The only difference in this list that I can imagine is them protecting Othella (Low cost) and leaving either Tim Thomas or Houston open - either wanting the Cats to take on their Salary or Calling their Bluff.

I'd leave Deke open to protect D Johnson, and leave AH open to protect Penny. I doubt Charlotte would take Houston's contract.

Penny makes too much money for the bobcats to take him.

Why would they want Penny's contract over Houston's? Think before you post.

Leave Houston open. No team in their right mind will take his contract. Protect Frank, Stephon, Nazr and KT for sure.

Id protect Harrington and leave open Houston which someone might have said before. Thats the only difference. Harrington would be great trade bait to add to a deal to make salaries work.

Id try and pursuade them to take Shandon Anderson for compensation. Which they could drop and it won't count against there cap.

Keep everyone with expiring contracts protected. Expose Houston and his contract for sure. Very small chance that Charlotte takes it on...

I think we should protect

1. Stephon Marbury
2. Mike Sweetney
3. Frank WIlliams
4. Nazr Mohammed
5. Tim Thomas
6. Kurt Thomas(depending on how much we signed him for)
7. Mutt
8. Demarr Johnson

It would really screw us if they took Houston, but with his contract I think it's safe to say they wouldn't.

VERY Interesting Expansion draft rule:

If a team has a player selected by the Bobcats, the team receives a trade exception equal to the player's 2004-05 salary. This allows teams to replace a player lost in the expansion draft with another player of comparable salary.

I think this means that if we left Houston or Penny unprotected and he was taken the Knicks would have a ~15M trade exception it could use to to take on a sign and trade (or just a normal traded) player without matching salaries. Gives alot of flexability. Anyone want to reconsider their choices?

I'd leave Deke unprotected. He has at most one year of effectiveness left and will only get less playing time next year.

The only way i would change my mind about protecting Houston is if we get McGrady,Kobe,E.Jones in the summer.whos gonna replace a scoring threat like him and who can spread the floor out for his teammates to play well,F.Williams

As good/valuable as Houston is now, he's also aging and injury prone now, and it's only gonna get worse. We should to try to move him at any opportunity that's given. The trade exception would definitely give us the flexibility to find an adequate replacement.
