New York Knicks captain and six-time NBA All-Star Amar'e Stoudemire proposed to Alexis Welch, the mother of Stoudemire's three children, in Paris Saturday night.

Stoudemire asked Welch for her hand in marriage while overlooking the Eiffel Tower lights outside of their penthouse at Le Meurice Hotel Belle Etoile Royal Suite at 11 p.m. local time. He surprised her with a dinner after they spent the day taking a private historical tour of Paris that included stops at the Louvre and other landmarks.

"I have been planning my proposal for a while and overlooking the entire Paris skyline seemed like a perfect place. I am so happy she said 'yes,' and now we can continue to build our life together as husband and wife," Stoudemire told PEOPLE from Paris.

Stoudemire designed the 8.5-carat radiant-cut ring, worth more than $1 million, with Los Angeles-based celebrity jeweler Shayan Afshar. The setting has 3.50 carats of flawless diamonds set in 18-carat white gold.

The couple met in 2002 after Stoudemire was drafted with the Phoenix Suns. They plan to wed in 2013.

why are we congratulating Amar'e? For marrying the woman that has already born three children for him? With a million dollar engagement ring?

Yea, I can really relate to that.

Dude needs to sort his crap out this off season and work on at least getting his mid range jumper back.

And that isn't even asking that much.

Asking a lot would be having him work on rebounding technique and help defense. But since he only gets paid $18/19M a year, that is asking too much.

co-sign with franco 1000% but...im still happy for the couple overall. it doesnt seem like amare is a bad person. seems very likable...to me, this is outside of NBA so thats not my jurisdiction, i just wish he and his future wife the best
Knicks should be improved: win about 40 games and maybe sneak into the playoffs. Melo, Rose and even Noah will have some nice moments however this team should be about PORZINGUS. the sooner they make him the primary player, the better

Come on man - marriage is a serious move and shows some stability. Stat had a rough year and I'm glad he is making some positive changes like marrying the mother of his children.

I know he was a big let down this season but that doesn't make him a bad person. Amare is great and I wish him and his fiancé all the best. Now get the honeymoon over with and hit the gym with Melo so both of you can prove the nay sayers wrong.
