Woodson's new Knicks deal coming this week: source

The Knicks are expected to announce Mike Woodson’s new contract as coach sometime “this week,” according to a source familiar with the situation. Lawyers began hammering out details on the pact last week and are committed to getting it done before Memorial Day weekend.

Woodson could get a three-year contract — which is the length of time left on the pacts of Carmelo Anthony, Amar’e Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler.

It has been 13 days since the Knicks’ season ended, but the contract delay was understandable because Woodson had to fire his agent, Joe Glass, upon request from Knicks owner James Dolan. Glass and Dolan have feuded dating to the Larry Brown contract dispute in 2006.

It is believed Woodson hired lawyers from Creative Artists Agency, which represents Anthony, J.R. Smith, team personnel director Mark Warkentien and assistant general manager Allan Houston. League insiders half-jokingly say C.A.A. runs the Knicks. A source said C.A.A. also tried to swipe Jeremy Lin from agent Roger Montgomery.

Dolan never reached out to former Bulls and Lakers coach Phil Jackson, presumably because he was concerned whether Jackson would fit into the stringent corporate structure discouraging coaches from speaking their mind.

i find it interesting that dolan demands woodson change his agent from joe glass (larry brows agent) to CAA. i also find it interesting we didn't really interview anyone else.

woodson's offensive scheme is almost as bad as mike browns

This is another mistake in the long line of mistakes made by the Knicks to not interview others is a huge mistake. This is not a championship move. Once again puzzle is left incomplete. What good is getting pieces if you are not planning on finishing the puzzle to a championship.

Gonna need a offensive coordinator.

why do you say this?

Because the Knicks lost horribly to Miami? One of the better defensive teams especially on the perimeter? And with the Knicks realistically without any PGs? And down several key cogs?

Is that your criteria?

Doesn't matter. Dolan likes his yes men.

No evaluation of Phil Jackson? Or he was rejected because they wouldn't be able to control him?

This franchise is a joke.

I am not judging anything on the Miami series, to many injuries to over come. The offense is stagnant with excessive isolation and isolation almost always is exposed come playoff time. All you have to do read the book on Jordan.

He didn't start winning until he utilized his teammates and that was drilled into his head by Jackson. Same thing with Woodson's tenure in Atlanta it was mostly isolation. I like Woodson but the Knicks needed to interview other coaches to judge him on 24 games just doesn't sit well with me since the GM was his friend from the past, I feel is more a favor than choosing the best candidate for the job.

I'm a little upset that they didn't open a channel to Jackson. This is going to prove to be one of those mistakes a team doesn't recover from.

The team looked great coming down the stretch. He earned another season.

I think it's too early for a Woodson extension past 1 year extra. I don't think it was earned. I know we were injured, but we didn't get beat in the playoffs; we got annihilated. IMHO, if we lose in the first round again, I don't think Woodson should be here past that.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

aren't you saying that any new coach for the Knicks shouldn't get more than a 1 year deal because it wasn't "earned"?

Beside Phil who brings rings, who has "earned" the job?

The most important job isn't Head Coach, it's the GM!!! Woodson should be just fine. He won't hurt you in the regular season and if you make sure to get enough of the holes on this roster filled with better players, that will have a greater impact than any different coach IMO.

Gotta lock up Lin and if they can improve the SG spot and perhaps add another useful Scorer off the bench that would help a ton. Most importantly is convincing Nash to come over. He doesn't even need a coach. Grunwald is also gonna need for the players to win the arbitration challenge on Bird Rights. If that happens I think the Knicks will win the Atlantic.

Like I said Woody should be fine, so long as you give him the weapons.

Someone with a proven track record of success. Phil Jackson makes sense, but we didn't even reach out to him. Personally, I think Stan Van Gundy is a hell of a better candidate than Mike Woodson. Woodson already failed once in the playoffs - he did not have this team prepared for the series; that's on the coach. His substitutions are sometimes strange. This will be his second shot. If he fails again, I don't want him here to start a third season. That's all I'm saying. Our window is very small, IMHO, and I don't want to blow it if it's not going to get us anywhere. If we make the second round and put up a decent showing, fine, let's keep him. But losing in 5 games in the playoffs where we basically get pwned in the four losses, that has to be on the coach. It's not like we lost four close games.

you just offered up a coach with the name Van Gundy in it?

I think you can do better, this time without the obvious comedy in your first attempt. Try again?

My first choice and when Woodson took over
-------------------------------------------------

Rick Carlise would have been my first choice but Cuban just locked him in for another 4 years, about a week or so ago.
I think we need motion, team work, a respectable coach, and to continue building on defensive schemes.
I have loved Carlise on the Pacers and the Detroit Pistons, I think he is one of the better younger coaches in the league.

Woodson says all the right things, but when the play offs came, it was completely the opposite.
The first couple of games, after he took over, we saw Amare playing good defense.
We saw ball movement, we saw Melo moving it, and Melo posting up.
We saw Amare and Tyson Chandler fighting for post position and they scored a couple of post moves.
They played great defense, and Lin also did his thing with his penetration.
It wasn't 90% ruled on the PG, but it wasn't all Iso ball either.
He seemed to utilize EVERYONE as a threat and it motivated the team and we regained morale.

Woodson and Knicks vs Heat
------------------------------
"Holding no one responsible for their own actions" Well, honestly speaking, did we really think we had a shot when Iman went down and Tyson had a bad flue.
On top of losing Lin and not having a 100% Jarred Jeffries?
It is hard to say, but I would be lying to you if I thought we had a shot under those circumstances.
We have no post players, we have no penetration, we have one lock down defender that has to defend the paint and 4 other guys, when his man shoots 3pointers and 17 footers.

So with that said, I think even if we had a full squad, I think we are just too raw, and needed to gain experience.
We just match up very poorly with Miami and if our guys never were hurt, I would expect the same result.
It would have been about getting experience for Lin, Iman, and seeing how the rest of the team would respond together.
Some players play very well under pressure situation, not so much for others.

We didn't have the ability to go anything else but give the ball to Melo, Amare, or JR Smith, because only those guys could even get a shot off.
Unfortunately, we could not see if Woodson would be able to teach, mentor, and develop our young guns, in Lin and Iman.
If he would have held them "accountable", if he would have the balls to call out Melo to move the ball or sit up, tell Amare to box out and play defense, tell Tyson Chandler
and Amare to get post position, and to get use to play in sync with each other.
Not having a full squad, we couldn't blame Melo or JR Smith for the way they played because I don't think they wanted to do it like that but they lacked the players to play a system.

Dantoni
---------------
I think he for the Knicks played well after he took over, but is it do to Woodson or because the team just needed a change.
Dantoni lost his confidence, philosophy, and his players (at least Melo and some of them) .
So they responded, but I am not sure if we can give Woodson all the credit.
I surely don't like the way the Knick's played, even when Melo won the game for us in game 4 vs Miami.
I hope he doesn't play that style next year, if he does, I surely would move his ass if I was the GM.
Taking bad shots vs a team like Miami, especially when they know you are going to shoot it, means they will try to run on you and give them the ability to have a head start on the fast break. Giving them rebounding position, with contested shots, and an early start is doomed if we miss.
Yes Melo won the game for us, but we were the worse team I have ever seen in the playoffs.
We had no ball movement, counter moves, plays run, other than the initial PnR.
We stopped using picks and movement off the ball and never ran any plays to try to get Novak open.
I am not saying he should be a play in which he is the #1 option, but he he sure should be an option with some options.

Options?
-----------------
Tibs, I am pretty sure will extend with Heat.
Doc Rivers, I am not sure what direction The Celtics are going, with so many FA's on their roster.
Phil Jackson, will look to squeeze Dolan for 8-12milllion per year and say I need different players, while we just don't have much ability to make many changes.
Woodson seems to have inspired the Knicks when he took over and most importantly tells Dolan what he wants to hear.
Yes Sir, No Sir, Yes I think they can work together, no, I know they can work together!
And for anyone that thinks Amare, Melo, and Tyson Chandler can still work out to be our big 3 vs the Championship caliber teams, I think you are blind.
We can beat on on some under .500% and like superb, but plain and simple, vs Championship caliber teams, we would never win a 7 game series, with our big 3.
They are exposed vs good/great defensive teams and we need to build an identity, roles for players, and chemistry, with a stronger foundation.

++1. People keep criticizing him for Iso-Melo but, they forget when we had a point guard the offense flowed very smoothly. He only went with Iso Melo cause Landy has hands more suited to stocking grocery shelves than handling a basketball, Amare turned into a card-board cut out of a player and Davis is old, playing on fumes and damn near incapable of reaching the basket.

the fact that you can't even have an unrelated thread without some tool here bringing him up make me think that rational minds are few and far between. Bunch of emotionally weak, angst riddled people. I mean, how many times can you argue the same shyt

Yes Phil Jackson is great we get it just look at the lakers now with virtually the same team they won their last championship with. But I think it is pretty clear Phil does not want to coach thos roster. Woodson couldve got an extension off of 18-6 before the playoffs even started if the Knicks werent feeling out phil

I think he does want to come over, he is just playing "hard to get, like a high school girl" so he can create a bigger market/advantage for his services.
Lets be honest, if Dolan gave 6m a year to Dantoni, Zen will be in the range of 8-12m.
And who cannot use 8-12 M for 2-3 years?
