I hate the name of this theory because it doesn't apply to Patrick Ewing. But Stoudemire is a prime candidate for this. Does anyone doubt that they're going to play better on Thursday without him?

Ewing gave everything he had on both ends. Hate was unjustified & irrational. Amare's career on the other hand is harder to defend

Are you saying the Knicks played better without Ewing? I'm missing the connection to him.

That

Wasn't there a time when people also wanted Ewing off the bench? Camby was tha sh!t!

I kinda expect the Knicks to play better on defense and if Melo can somehow replicate his post-Lin play, they could probably lose by 4.

oh we're talking about 99 after ewing's wrist and achilles surgery and a surging Camby. When in reality we probably don't beat the Heat without Ewing neutralizing Alonzo in the 1st round. Had Ewing played against Drob & Duncan the Knicks might not have lost in 5 as we were completely overmatched in the frontcourt.

I am not knocking Ewing!

He was a shell of himself at that point. Jordan was great but not on Washington he wasnt.

nah, it wasn't that they/we/I wanted him off the bench but, that we wanted him to understand that he wasn't that Dude anymore. That he had to recognize that Alan and Spree were options 1&2 and that he wasn't likely going to get 20shots a game anymore. Ewing didn't accept reality until he got hurt in 99 and then it was like you guys win it for me.

The hate was never deserved because he took us out of mediocrity and had the house rocking for years but, his communication skills with fans and the media didn't help his cause as he got older.

Say what you want but Pat played on both ends and never took a day off.

the fact that you can't even have an unrelated thread without some tool here bringing him up make me think that rational minds are few and far between. Bunch of emotionally weak, angst riddled people. I mean, how many times can you argue the same shyt

Ewing played very well that year when healthy. He played well his first year in Seattle. Was it the old Ewing pre wrist & achillies NO but he was still a top center on both ends. This was at a time when Shaq and Duncan were winning championships. You were not winning one with a frail Camby and 6'9 Kurt Thomas at Center

I loved that team, even when Ewing went down. Actually respected them even more because of that amazing run. Was expecting a similar one, at least in attitude because the team has talent, but I guess they don't believe they have enough to take the Heat. I did, when the series started.

I remember that. They were calling Zoe the best Center in the East which pissed Pat off. Pat declared at the start of that series that he was still the best and went out AND PROVED IT. I will always remember the fire in Ewing. You almost expected smoke and fire to come out of those wide ass nostrils.

Yeah, Ewing was something else. Too bad he never got to taste a championship.

Man, if our stars had half that fire, it wouldn't be that easy to beat us. Ewing was a force.

All I ever wanted was for Ewing to finally get his ring. The Knicks can win a championship this year and it would never be as sweet as it could've been watching Ewing hoist the trophy. Knicks never really got him that 2nd SUPERSTAR 96-97 came close if not for PJ Brown but they would've still had to beat Jordan's Bulls

I share the feeling. He always worked so hard and was proud of wearing orange and blue. I would love to get him back as an assistant and win a championship so we could see him hoisting the trophy surrounded by orange and blue, like it should've been back then.

A man can dream.

Some people missed my point which means not everyone has heard of "The Ewing Theory". Basically, Bill SImmons wrote a column (which some say is the piece that made him) where he penned the Ewing Theory. He basically says that some times when a start player goes down it actually is better for the team and they go on to greatness. He wrote this during the '99 run after Ewing went down. Other (better) examples are Nomar getting traded from the Redsox in '04 and them winnign the world series taht year, Tiki Barber retiring after '06 and the Giants winning the Super Bowl the next season, etc. Ewing is a poor example though because they nmever would've beaten Miami in the first round without him and he was the key missing piece in the finals. Also, with Ewing the next year they made it back to the ECF.

But in general, the theory is pretty good in a lot of cases. And I think Stoudemire is a prime candidate. The only problem is that we still don't have a chance against Miami, even though I do think we'll play better.

Ewing did not go down. Without him neutralizing Alonzo the Knicks don't beat Miami. Atlanta & Indy were beatable without Ewing and with the high flying Camby but San Antonio clearly were not. P.S. Bill Simmons is a moron

I'd like to see if Bill Simmons has also authored the "Dudley Theory", whereby he explains how if the Yalie had just played to his potential as a starting center, the Knicks would have won the chip in '99 and completely forgotten all about Ewing.

Here's what I call the "Cosell Theory": the press really are scum, and the people in sports media are the scrapings at the bottom of the scum barrel.

Ewing was the Knicks for almost two decades; and most of the press are still nourishing their inner bitch about him. No wonder he hardly ever talked to them.
