We have an opportunity to finish anywhere from 6-8, with an extreme outside shot at the division, so I thought this would be a good post to have and to update until the end of the season. For those unfamiliar with magic numbers, it's the combined wins for our team plus losses for another team in order for us to guarantee a finish ahead of them in the standings. For instance, our magic number with Philly is seven, which means if we go 7-0 we finish ahead of them, if they go 0-7 we finish ahead of them, if we go 5-2 and they go 2-5 or 1-6 or 0-7 we would finish ahead of them. And, if the magic number is more than the combined games left between the two teams then it is impossible to catch them in the standings. So, in order of most likely to least likely, here it is:

Milwaukee: combined games left: 14 ; magic number: 6
Philadelphia: combined games left: 14; magic number: 7
Orlando: combined games left: 14; magic number: 10
Boston: combined games left: 14; magic number: 11

We actually have a game against Boston which makes it somewhat possible to catch them. Though even if we beat Boston, the season series would be 2-2 and not sure what the next tiebreaker is after overall record and head to head.

We own the tiebreaker with the Magic which means catching them is the same as passing them. Magic playing without Dwight the rest of the way (1-4 this season without him) means I think the Knicks have a chance.

Magic number???? Pfff, all we need is the Magic's numbers. After tonight they finsh out the season verus playoff teams with out Dwhite. Knicks handle their business and they should be in the 6th seed.

I took tiebreakers into account as best I could. We won the season series vs Philly and Orlando so their magic numbers are based on ending the season with the same record. We split vs Milwaukee and will hopefully split vs Boston which means I believe that those tiebreakers go to Conference record and Division record; I'm not going to try to get that in depth with this so I made it easier on myself and made their magic numbers based on ending with a better record. But, it's possible that we could tie either of those teams and end up higher in the standings.

Boston is just out of reach, not impossible but highly improbable.
However, I keep thinking some type of collapse is imminent for them, but they probably know this is their last shot and they are playing like they want it all. We can help our cause if we beat them outright - its a 3 game difference in the loss column so they need to lose two more and we need to run the table to just tie them.

I hope boston looks forward to our game just because they have the bobcats tonight, they are on their third game in a row and they should have heavy legs. Im hoping the bobcats win the game, if we take care of the heat and win the game against them we will only be 1.5 games away from them

It will take more than Boston looking forward for them to lose to the Bobcat. They'd have to be not looking at all. Seriously. I mean blindfolded.

At this stage, Indiana or heat different sides of the same coin. Even Chicago at this point. Either we can rock this with a healthy amare, or we go down swinging.
Let's go Knicks. That's amare

UPDATE:

Milwaukee: games left 11, magic number 4
Philly: games left 10, magic number 4
Orlando: games left 10, magic number 9
Boston: games left 9, magic number 8

I've adjusted the Boston magic number to show that we could finish ahead of them if we finish tied with the same record; it's still a real long shot though.
