I think even the late, great Ray Charles would've seen this coming.

Lamar Odom's brief and bumpy ride with the Dallas Mavericks has come to an abrupt end.

The Mavericks and Odom spent Easter Sunday working out a parting, according to sources close to the situation, that frees the struggling Odom to leave the team immediately without actually being released.

"The Mavericks and I have mutually agreed that it's in the best interest of both parties for me to step away from the team," Odom said in a statement to ESPN.com.

"I'm sorry that things didn't work out better for both of us, but I wish the Mavs' organization, my teammates and Dallas fans nothing but continued success in the defense of their championship."

Sources said Monday that Odom's departure will be immediate and that the Mavericks intend to simply list him as inactive for the rest of the season instead of outright releasing him, leaving open the possibility that they could still trade him after the season in conjunction with the draft. Any team that has Odom on its roster as of June 29 must buy him out by that date for $2.4 million or otherwise accept responsibility for the full $8.2 million that Odom is scheduled to earn in 2012-13.

More at the link.

Would you take a chance on him? I like his game (rebounding and passing) and all but he's pretty soft.

Wooooooow, Odom couldn't even cut it for a single season in the Dirk Country.

Khloe ruined him.

Guy is not going anywhere this season.

He is La La land Kardashian attention whore who is pretty soft.

He is who he is and if the Lakes want him back Im sure they can work it out.

OH-Dumb was comtimplating retirement at seasons start and his head not into it for persoal reasons.

Thats cool. He has a good life.

Maybe if you will put some tissues next to him on the bench and a teddy bear.

Why would anyone but LA want him? He could have been a star on a contending team and he cried even then. And I liked the guy a lot as a player before this season.

He's a sensitive guy, and there's no shame in that- he's been through a lot over the years, probably more so than a lot of the people who mock him. He was great for LA, and a key reason why they won several championships- so before people start hating on him, just recognise what he's accomplished.

I'm not sure NY would be a good fit for him- the media could make his life hell. He just needs to take this time, and the summer, to decided if he really wants to carry on playing basketball. If he does, he needs to work like heck to get his conditioning and game back, and find a team he's happy playing for (Ha- maybe the Clippers!).

At the end of the day he's a good guy, and a really talented player who's accomplished a lot- he shouldn't be at the brunt of everyones jokes, when the chief reason for his decline is someones death over the summer.

Get the heck out of town, smackeddog. The guy came in and didn't give any effort. He pouted like a silly woman and betrayed his team.

Adults deal with stuff in their personal lives all the time, but when you have to feed the family you still get it together and put work in.

Guy plays basketball for a living making millions of cash dollars and you want us to feel sorry for him.

And what the hell do you know about what any poster here has been through?

He comes here and averages 10pts/9rebs/3ast off the bench and he can cry on the Charmin Bear on the bench for all I care.

No doubt he has game left but I don't know if he has any heart left.

He's at least worth a look; we could cut Bibby to make room for him and not lose anything.

On second thought, would he be playoff eligible? It's pretty late in the season.

Look, depression is a hell of a thing- I get why people look at Odom and think he's being lazy and has no heart etc, but that's what happens when you're depressed or grieving- you don't give a c**p about anything, and you can't convince yourself that it matters. You can also go into self destruction mode.

I don't know what any poster has been through, MarburyAnd1, but I do think if you've experienced the death of a child etc, you'd be more understanding and insightful of someone who's going through a similar thing, rather than just call them a big baby and a disgrace.

Lamar is from Queens

it's too perfect

"give me your tired, huddled 6'10 forwards yearning to run with Carmelo Antho-nee"

Pressure would be off too, he'd be hidden behind Melo and Lin's spotlight.

You have to take a long, look at Odom. We lucked up on Lin and JR and are better for it. We wont have much cap space next year and are without a draft pick. If he is willing to come on a hometown discount, you have to snatch him up. He is exactly what we need considering Amare's health.
