Perfect world you'd retain Novak, Smith & Davis. Lin & Shump are going nowhere. Explore trading Amare, Fields, Douglas & Walker for a younger PF who doesn't demand the ball and draft picks

See ya later Fields, Douglas, Walker. Need a decent rebounding 4 with decent mid range jumper to make up for Stat's remaining years as a Knick.

Perfect world:

Every game is a "youTube" highlight.

Melo would be a very good 4.

man if Melo gets wider as he gets older making Melo PF would not be a bad idea. Matchup nightmare for opposing PFs on the perimeter and off the dribble. Most PFs can't dribble!

perfect world would be no salary cap. I am not sure if Lin will stay. We got 3 big contracts already until 2015. I haven't looked at the figures but I think we are over the cap for next season already. Lin, Novak and Davis are all free agents after this season and I'm sure other teams will offer them good money that Knicks can't afford.

Does anyone know how often a team can use its exceptions? I know there's a biannual one but what about the MLE and LLE, can those be used every year because that would be a huge help in keeping some of our free agents.

Davis is not going anywhere as he is still getting over 15Mill next year from the Cavs.
Lin's contract status has been talked about in depth and he is also going nowhere as he cannot be offered anything more than the MLE and we can match as he is restricted.
Novak & Smith are the only real question marks this offseason.

We have Novak's bird rights so we can offer him whatever we want regardless of cap space.
Smith has a player option next year for almost 3Million. He might decide to take the money and run or hang on 1 more year befoer ewe compensate him with Bird rights.

Please stop propagating this absurdity that somehow we are in danger of losing LIN... not in the realm of reality.

Could you explain that? I'm not saying you're wrong, I honestly don't know. I now that a player is supposed to be on the same team for 3 years for a team to gain Bird rights, so how would that work with Novak who's only been here a year?

I would definitely like to see us explore other PFs who fit a role here. Melo should be more of a PF on offense, so a stretch-4 is preferable. Also, i think we could pick up Camby for the vets minimum and he would serve as a very solid backup center behind Chandler for 15 mins per game. I think as long as Shumpert continues to improve his jumper, he should move into the starting SG role, and Fields would be a solid rotation player for 20 mpg.

Novak was picked up off waivers, hence his contract from the previous year with the Spurs counts towards the bird rights.

Let me be more specific... We have his "Early Bird rights". Which means we can offer him up to the league average (close to MLE) without restrictions due to cap.

that's wrong.

If a player is waived and is claimed by another team before he clears waivers, then his Bird clock resets.

it's going to be very tough to keep Novak, Lin, Baron Davis and JR Smith. in fact, i think we're only in position to keep one out of the four.

Hey evil.. Thanks for the link. I stand corrected on the transfer of Bird Rights once waived...

But... That only applies to Novak.

Lin is a different Story.... http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/7583558/nba-how-new-york-knicks-keep-jeremy-lin
There is no chance we lose LIN....

Baron Davis is still getting paid one more year by the Cavs... so I see no reason we can't keep him if he wants to play for us.
JR Smith... We will probably lose because we cannot keep him unless he picks up his player option for next year.

Thanks for clarifying the details. I'm glad we're not going to lose Lin. Davis might want to retire as a Knicks if we get to semifinals this year and hopefully he will stay. JR Smith, he is playing like a team player so I'm not sure if he's happy here or he's already planning for next year's move like a mercenary? I don't mind if we lose Novak, although he's the Steve Kerr for Knicks.

I am really hoping Novak stays and am actually optimistic about it.
Sean Williams last year looked AMAZING from the 3 and he has completely fell off the face of the planet this year.
I am almost certain that Sean Williams is regretting not waiting one more week to re-sign with the Knicks.
Had Seanm Williams had another good year with us he would have gotten paid at least 5Mill a year in the offseason, now he will be lucky to sniff anything above the minimum.

I an hoping Novak takes notice on Sean William's numbers with other teams this year.
If Novak statys for one more year and performs like he is this year we would definitely take care of him.
If Novak leaves he could conceivably be Sean Williams redux.
I hope this plays in our favor.

no prob.

i think that we keep Lin without a doubt.

i think that Baron might not wanna finish his career as a backup to Lin. but perhaps i'm wrong about that.

i think JR gets a bigger offer elsewhere. but he might entertain picking up his $2.5M option.

i think Novak is the dude we probably lose. he's gonna get more than the minimum. maybe not Kapono money, but he'll take a good chunk of someone's MLE. of course, we will likely have to dip into our MLE to keep Lin.

we'll see how it plays out. very rarely do guys forego more money for the better situation.

Yes, I think Novak's staying will come down to money. We were the first team to give him a shot so he is probably inclined to stay, but money always talks. I think Smith and Baron are gone.

I just hope that people will like me

shawne williams is so overrated. he hit the corner 3 last year in dantoni's system. Novak can shoot the 3 from anywhere catch n shoot or off the dribble. A real 3pt specialist
