OK, time to talk basketball. Who is Mike Woodson? I mean I'm going to look him up right now: his coaching record, his playing record. I had no idea until today that "he started his career in New York" and that he was a college teammate of Isiah. I know like many that he was a former head coach and brought in for defense. I guess this 20-something game audition as interim head coach is going to be our true introduction to him, but looking for folks' thoughts on Mike.

Maybe we'll have a goateed emoticon to represent him if we are talking about the playoffs in a couple months...

June 10, 1980: Drafted by the New York Knicks in the 1st round (12th pick) of the 1980 NBA Draft.

June 10, 1981: Traded by the New York Knicks to the New Jersey Nets for Mike Newlin.

He lasted exactly a year in his first stint, traded to our cross-river rivals. Interesting.

Mike Woodson to take over the NY Knicks after Mike D'Antoni steps aside
Knicks have 24 games to try and salvage season

With Mike D'Antoni walking away from the Knicks it will be up to Mike Woodson to try to right the ship.

The Knicks (18-24), who enter Wednesday night's game against Portland losers of six straight, are tied with the Bucks for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Woodson and the Knicks have 24 games to try and salvage the season.

Here's a brief look at Woodson's background:

- Was drafted out of Indiana by the Knicks with the 12th overall pick in the 1980 NBA Draft

- Played with Isiah Thomas at Indiana and has strong tied to the disgraced former Knicks coach/executive

- Traded to the Nets on June 10, 1981 for Mike Newlin

- Played 11 seasons in the NBA with Knicks, Nets, Kings, Clippers, Rockets and Cavaliers (averaged 14 points per game)

- Served as an assistant coach to Larry Brown in Detroit and Philadelphia

- Was hired as head coach of the Atlanta Hawks before the 2004-05 season

- Finished 40 games under .500 in six seasons with the Hawks (206-286 regular season record; 11-18 in the playoffs)

- Interviewed for head coaching jobs with Houston and Detoit in the offseason before taking assistant position with the Knicks

Is the Darrell Walker Education Thread next?

Bill Smith appears to be a story worth knowing.

“He brings fresh thoughts to me from a defensive standpoint, and I need that,” Woodson said. “I’m a coach that’s always willing to listen and learn.” With a chuckle, he added, “He’s got more knowledge than I do, put it that way.”

gunsnewing - you are indeed jedi.

You did NOT fall for the hype and the prejudice. You watched the game itself and cam away with you own conclusion, courageous as it was.

You sir, are an original thinker. Well sone.
