This is the first thing I thought of after Mike quit. We will have to see what happens. But if things don't work out Lin might not sign a 2 year deal and just play out the 1 yr QO (which he has to sign anyway in order to sign the 2 year deal I heard.)

Jeremy Lin is expected to be greatly impacted by the resignation of Mike D'Antoni.

Lin's breakout was at least in part due to how he ran D'Antoni's system while Carmelo Anthony was out with an injury.

Mike Woodson is known for running an offense that relies heavily on isolation plays, which is a strength of Carmelo Anthony.

One scout says the change is "probably going to cost Lin millions in new contract."

edit - Mod, can you edit the title please. Don't know how that happened. Thx

Found it.
40. What if a restricted free agent has no interest in staying with his original team? Is there any way he can force the issue?

Most teams are hesitant to sign restricted free agents to offer sheets, because it is often a given that the offer will be matched by the player's original team, and the team's cap room is tied up while the offer sheet is outstanding (however this was assuaged somewhat when the current CBA shortened the deadline from 15 days to seven). If the player really wants to leave, he can accept his original team's qualifying offer, which constitutes a one-year contract at a scale salary. The player must play with his original team for the season, but following that season he will be a free agent again. If he meets the tenure requirement he will be unrestricted, and then can sign with any other team.

For example, Michael Olowokandi was a restricted free agent in 2002. Rather than entering free agency as a restricted free agent, he accepted the Clippers' qualifying offer for the 2002-03 season, and entered free agency in 2003 as an unrestricted free agent (signing with Minnesota).

This strategy obviously would not be effective for players who would continue to be subject to restricted free agency. For example, if a second round pick completes a two year contract, he will be subject to restricted free agency. If he accepts his qualifying offer and plays an additional season with his previous team, he would be a three year veteran the following summer and still subject to restricted free agency.

it don't get the point of what the Scout is saying.

MDA resigning has nothing to do with the circumstance about what Lin could or couldn't do from a contract standpoint. Nothing changes except who coaches for NY.

Martin - it's saying that in the wrong system (triangle, ISO, etc.) Lin's stats, effect & then marketability would go down. That would cost him lots of money. So Lin might then just play one year under the QO so he could leave after a year and find a team more suited for his attacking style.

This scout don't know jack about basketball.

Quality players can adapt and play under any circumstance. The figure it out.

Jeremy Lin is a quality basketball player. He is learning the joy of rebounding.

"That's one thing that Coach Woodson talks a lot about," Lin said. "He cares a lot about defense and rebounding, and that will feed into our offense. He always says he doesn't care who scores, as long as we defend. It gives us easy baskets, it gives us momentum, it gives us rhythm, being able to run out and get the rebound, play fast and get open shots."

Expect a triple double from Lin in the near future.

We'll see how this plays out. It has to do with the half court offense that Woodson installs. Playing defense and rebounding are what he can talk to his players about from the beginning. The half court offense will require several practices to install.

Disagree. Like any other player, Jeremy Lin needs to be put in the right system to get the most out to him. The GMs and scouts have already seen what Lin can do in the right system. D'Antoni or no D'Antoni, Lin showed his skillset to the world and he will get paid.

i read that when he broke out in feb, in the first week alone he was already worth at least 15 million NOT on his basketball salary. i wouldn't worry about Lin's future income...

Everyone's making money off of Lin except Lin. He's a modern day slave.

Slavery By Another Name

Syniko wrote:Everyone's making money off of Lin except Lin. He's a modern day slave.

While the statistics may have been inflated during the initial 7 game winning streak of Linsanity, it doesn’t change the fact that the kid has some serious talent. A “system” in and of itself does not produce those kinds of results. If they did, then Lin never would have gotten an opportunity in the first place. The most important thing that he got was an opportunity with no real restrictions which resulted in one simple truth: Jeremy Lin can play in this league. There are lots of talented players in this league, but you have to believe you can do it. Lin knows he can play and just as important his teammates know he can play.
- Tommy Dee

Lin can play. He will get paid.

Roger Montgomery took on Lin when other agents were ignoring him. He has hired two full-time staff members, one to work on marketing and player relations, the other to be an administrative assistant — with the enviable task of sifting through the pitches cascading their way. They are taking their time, talking to Nike about a revised deal for Lin, trying to fend off unsolicited advice. And withstanding the criticism from those who think Montgomery is doing Lin a disservice by not getting his name on several dotted lines right now. - NYTimes

I’ve been hearing that we should strike while the iron is hot, as though Jeremy’s a one-hit wonder,” Montgomery said. “People don’t know what we should do, but they’re on TV pretending they do.”

Montgomery has done an excellent job of shielding Lin from the distractions of merchants. The main thing is to finish the season strong.

There will be plenty of time for endorsements after May.

Why should knicks fans care how much Jeremy makes and loses. We should care if he is able to win us basketball games or contribute in a way that enables us to win basketball games. The movie is over - lets get back to basketball.

If Lin is talented then he should be able to shine anywhere. If not, then he ain't that good.

I think Lin has already shown he is the real deal. I have the NBA league pass, and I watch many of the other team's games. There is no other pg in the league right now who gets overplayed the way Lin does and still makes plays. You can clearly see when other teams play against the Knicks how much resentment the players from the other teams have for Lin. Lin gets foul hard more than another other pg this season than I have seen in a while, and get probably less than half the calls. Hill from the Pacers literally shoved him to the ground, and than was upset when he was called for the foul and then got himself a tech.

I just love the fact that Lin get defended so hard, and he still makes plays. Guys in the NBA have absolutely no respect for his game. His numbers speak for themselves. The guy could ball plan and simple.

I agree. I am just making a point to all the "now that mda is gone Lin will suck" people. If he's good, he will be good anywhere. He had a great game last night and I think that woodson is working with him to stop overdribbling through traps and to move the ball quicker. One of my biggest problems with MDA/Lin is that they did not appear to be adjusting to the traps.

Really well said. Imagine another no name PG getting constant double teams and defensive plays drawn around him. Lin really is an up and coming great PG. You bring up a great point in the "teams overplaying Lin" and did you notice the 4th quarter last night? I forget the lineup, but everyone out there was dangerous. Some (not much) space was created and Lin just kept taking the ball inside. I loved it. It is great having a player who can do that when the offense sputters. Anyway, my point is, as we keep improving teams will simply not be able to devote as much attention to Lin.

Melo and Stat are slowly coming around but neither is shooting great. That said, Melo is still drawing a lot of double teams and that is just really opening things up for the team and with Melo's vision he can often get it right back to Lin. It's nice the two clearly get along.

That play where Lin got shoved, did look a bit like Lin tripped. But I thought it was rough anyway and Lin was getting some pretty hard fouls not called so it was due justice. I think the lack of calls is partly because he is a bit out of control and a "rookie", but he should be getting to line more often EARLIER in games. They started calling it in the 4th - luckily.

We got a gem of a player guys. I do wish we had seen him play more in D'Antoni's offense as I really wanted to see him have a 20 & 20 game, with maybe 10 rebounds! He was capable. Still possible in this offense.

MSG has just recent inked major deals with Taiwanese companies and there's no way they're gonna let Lin decline due to some kind of coaching decision not based on merit. He'd have to play his way out of the SL. I think Lin will be just fine, besides it's clear to me that Woody is actually gonna continue to use a lot of MDA's system in addition to some of his own ideas. Why not? He get's the best of both worlds. He finds a way to keep Lin in his comfort zone at the same time he can widen Lin's perspectives and keep STAT and Melo happy. It's all about balance.

Ok fine!!! Let's just say "he will use some of the plays from MDA's "system"". If that makes you feel better than I am willing to swallow. Eeeesh! That came out wrong

There's what you keep saying then there's what the actual truth is:

“On offense, we have a little more post-ups, not a lot more,” Jeremy Lin was saying after the Knicks whipped Indiana, 102-88, Saturday night. “The defense hasn’t changed. We have all 15 guys buying in now. That’s the big difference.”
“Everybody knows where the ball is going and guys are playing with tremendous confidence,” Amar’e Stoudemire said. “There are four things the coaches are emphasizing — one, rebound the ball, two, play defense, three, apply ball pressure and four, guard the screen and roll.”
D’Antoni said the same stuff, yet Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony had stopped listening. Against the Pacers, both superstars shot and scored when needed, no more than that. They combined for 21 shots and 32 points. Lin was remarkable once more, inventing creative havoc and lofting those high-arc floaters for 19 points, a team high.

You seem quite upset and defensive about us idiots not seeing what is so clear to you - THAT MDA IS NOW VICARIOUSLY RUNNING THIS TEAM THROUGH WOODSON WITH ALL THE WISDOM THAT HE PREVIOUSLY BESTOWED ON BOTH OFFENSE AND DEFENSE. So, I was just throwing you a bone to say, "fine view it and believe what you'd like", if we win, I am happy.

Linsanity Following Yao

The 6-foot-3 guard, who ignited a fan frenzy dubbed “Linsanity,” follows former Houston Rockets’ All-Star center Yao Ming in drawing Chinese interest in the NBA. The 7-foot-6- inch Yao, a Shanghai resident, signed sponsorship deals with companies including Apple Inc. and McDonald’s Corp before he retired last July. Sports Illustrated in June ranked him the fifth-highest paid non-U.S. athlete in the world, with an estimated annual income of $36 million.

At the very least, I sure he will do a better acting job than B.Griffen in those Kia commercials. JLIn has a good sense of humor and is more natural in front of the camera.
