We talk fitness here time to time....

Right now i'm preparing to run a half marathon on March 24. Never ran that far in my adulthood. Im still training in the gym too in between pounding the pavement preparing for this race.

After the race I will be back to speed and power training, doing a lot of plyoetric training, playing basketball , mastering the 5k, and just kicking ass in the gym and the parks.....

Speak in it brothers...take it where you may

Right now I'm not. I do walk my dogs about 2 miles a day but I've got a bad right knee and haven't been doing any intense exercise. I just got new orthotics and I feel better balanced with them than I ever have. I'm really hoping they help my knee and I can play basketball again.

Good luck with the half marathon! How old are you?

I wouldn't run a marathon. Marathons are for lunatics. Guys drop dead from marathons.

I would focus on your strength and not bother with petty persuits such as marathons.

You ever see the guys who run marathons? Take a good look. They're all emaciated stick-figures.

Lift weights.

ed: Now I see you said half-marathon. I still go with the same response.

I'm an avid mountain biker, but realistically get to go on weekends, and probably every other week on average. I had been having trouble getting to the gym enough because I'd moved and it was out of the way, so I was going like once a week. So I changed gyms for one that is more convenient (one location near work, and one near home) and they had a promotion that if you went 12 times in the first month, they'd waive the initiation fee.
So I took up the challenge, and decided that rather than trying to get in there for 1.5+ hours, once or twice a week, I'd try to go for 45 minutes 4 times a week in the mornings before work. I'm not a morning person AT ALL, so this was really difficult. But I'll tell you what, after doing this for a month, I feel incredible. I'd been stuck in a rut where I was often getting injured (knee/back/neck strains), but I think going more frequently let my body be more active and resilient, and I haven't felt this good in years (I'm 41). Also, going in the morning means that I don't have to choose between getting in a workout and going out after work, or just plain going home.
Hopefully I can keep it up. Sleep is a powerful allure.

I had to get that rant out.

But I stay fit by lifting heavy things.

Because of my strength training program, I am able to run a 5k or even a 10k at the drop of a hat and post respectable times.

Lift heavy things 2-3 times per week, sprint once every 7-10 days, and walk as much as possible at all other times, slowly. This is the simple recipe for awesome fitness.

Heavy things? Do you lift weights only or do you really go around all day looking for heavy things to lift?

32 here too. How long does your knee stay sore for after playing bball? I'm talking about soreness in the joint not the muscles. Just wondering. For me, it's a few days, and I definitely feel it when I go up and down stairs. Doc says my knee cap does glide right when I move.

How heavy do you go? I used like to try to lift the earth too but only got hurt because of it. I spent the last 2 years breaking down my body trying to become more well rounded and powerful as apposed to being just strong. I was 225 in 2010....im 180 now...just tryinv to master myself and improve as I challenge myself to do things I never thought I could.

That's why I signed up for this half marathon. 13 miles....I need to complete it

180 doesn't sound emaciated like MA1C was saying, unless you're 7'4"

I tore my acl 6 years ago....I never rehabbed it the way I should have. I get sore on the sides of my knee. And my leg would just die before my other one would. It's hard to play when your leg just gets tired quick....i'm working on that now though. The training is helping build stamina in the bad leg. Just trying to get it better.

What does you're doctor recommend? Surgery? Physical therapy?

Physical therapy and strengthening exercises, which I've done before and they didn't help. If the orthotics don't help, then I'll try physical therapy again. I get soreness below the knee cap (the area your doctor hits to test your reflexes).

You got patella issues...ever try the runners strap that goes over the patella tendon?

I lift 15 lbs thighs and squeeze 7 lb breast for strength training.
I get 35 strokes in per minute for about 13 mins for cardio.
All on a nightly basis for endurance training.

I do an hour of lifting followed by an hour of indoor mountain biking three days a week. In addition to that, I practice martial arts. In total it's about nine hours of working out per week. Food-wise I stick to about 1600-1800 calories per day, but my diet isn't perfect by any stretch.
