One year rentals were the perfect storm it's not like he out manuevered to get JR/BD.But, if Amare turns up lame and is giving us what we have seen Tyson Chandler (who has played very well) signing will be a disaster because we no longer have our amnesty. With 54MM tied up in three guys and another 10MM likely in Lin/Fields we would be a perenial early exit, because we won't have the ability to sign guys.
I agree about the amnesty. I've expressed my concern over this in many threads but most people believe it was worth it to get Chandler this year even though (if Amare becomes a permanent senior citizen) we could have made a run at DHoward next year.
He has made some good short term moves to get us a pretty darn good roster and for that he deserves props. However, I have siad this many times before the amnesty should have been saved for Amare. His contract is too much of a risk and will kill our cap space for years if he really is on the decline. I don't buy the idea that otherteams will just take Amare because they need to worry about he salary floor etc. That sounds pretty desperate. And I think Grunwald has been very lucky in the way things have turned out.
I give him credit for keeping Lin on the radar (Lin had apparently impressed the Knicks during pre draft work outs) then sending him and JErome J to the D-League. I also give him credit for Tyson Chandler who has singlehandedly made us better on defense. Signing Novak was a good idea. I am not sold on JR Smith yet, but he has exceeded my limited expectations in the short term. I would like to see how Grunwalds keeps the team around after this season and what he does about the Amare situation. I hope amare does find his game back, but I am not holding my breath.
