Carmelo Anthony said he is on a “personal vendetta’’ to erase the Knicks’ identity as a club that can’t play defense. Anthony heard it all offseason after the four-game playoff sweep to Boston and doesn’t want to hear it again.
This season, the Knicks’ image is changing fast. Last night, they played better defense than the league’s best defensive club in a 85-79 statement win over the red-hot, Atlantic Division-leading Sixers at the Garden. It was the Knicks’ fourth straight victory.
Neither Anthony nor rookie sensation Iman Shumpert could throw the ball into the Hudson, but who cares except maybe coach Mike D’Antoni, whose team is winning with defense, as strange as that sounds.

You have to admit, their defense has looked pretty damn impress the last few games. There is a test coming up. Memphis and OKC. If we can show up against them and defend, the league will take notice.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Nice. I can't see the games because of these rich morons, so this is really good to hear.

It may end up being the case that Shumpert saves the season for the team because of his play on both ends of the court.

did Carmelo ever say that under George Karl or in 7 years in Denver?

NO

Funny how Chandler + Shumpert + a motivated Melo and the Knicks are now a good defensive team.

Good job NY Knicks coaching staff.

lol, now that's funny. does anyone still think d'antoni has lost this team? that was the joke of the year so far.

in respect to melo - great to hear him saying this. hopefully he sticks with it and follows through.

Knicks played great defense last night. Made it very difficult for Philly to get good shots, especially in the first half. I never thought i would see the day when i was happy with the Knicks defense and more concerned with the offense. We just lack the offensive flow (which should get solved with a healthy Davis) and scoring off the bench. If Harrellson didn't come off the bench and knock down shots, i'm not sure where we would have found that spark from.

Hey Folks how bout the rebounding the last few games, especially last night. The Sixers weren't even getting close to offensive rebounds. It was one and done. I think we outrebounded them by at least 10. I'll take Defense and rebounding all Day Long. Just like I'll take the Giants +9 against the Packers, all day long!

To his credit, Melo has been playing defense or playing hard ever since he got here...And has been passing the ball as well...

Best part of Melo's game last night--mixing it up with Iggy. Rare to see that type of pissed-off reaction from the guy. Really liked it. (Also loved that he was the first guy running off the bench to congratulate Shump on his steal, STAT feed). I have no proof of anything, but I think Chandler is impacting him.

I think people pegged him in an unflattering way in Denver...I also think he was a little lazy there and didn't put his all around effort of passing and defense in Denver...I really thinks he wants to win and prove to people they were wrong about him, attitude, defense, passing, the entire gamut...Chandler stepping up on defense isn't hurting either...

except when he's punching jared jeffries in the face and running away.

Sure, but which one of us wouldn't do the exact same thing?

you just countered your own point. He was pegged that way in Den (including by his head coach) because he was! He took a lot of games off, ran up his scoring totals in games against garbage teams and easy matchups and floated quite a bit.

I never ever said Melo wasnt a great and talented player, but based on what I saw in Denver I didnt like that trade at all because you dont trade your roster for a guy who is happy to collect stats and all star game appearances.

Know what?

Melo is proving me wrong and I love it. I really enjoy watching the guy every night. His offensive game is like a poor man's Michael Jordan. He's got the best mid range game in the league and its backed by his ability to wreck havok in the post. He's not a great 3 shooter but sometimes he gets hot from there and he hits enough that its worth him keeping that shot as it seems to help keep guys honest. It also seems his 3s tend to be important doesnt it? Most of all he's playing with passion here he simply didnt play with in Denver. Who saw that coming? He may not be our leader but he's our best player and he's leading by example and nothing hold more water than that.

As for Chandler I think your are 100% seeing the impact on the defense and the boards. This dude was a key cog in a title winning team and he's got the Knick players listening.

The Knicks are pouring a TON of effort into defense. They wont need to do that all season. It will get a bit easier once they are all used to each other and when Davis takes Field's spot in the SL the offense will come in line also.

In the meantime? Knicks seems happy to simply beat down teams with their big frontcourt and its working.

Im lovin it.
