I still don't get Hollinger's and Marc Stein's rankings. I know Hollinger's is based on some complex formulas and Stein's based on ESPN Bias, but how are the Knicks 24th out of 30 teams on Hollinger and 17th on Stein behind teams like Minnesota(3-6) and Houston (2-6)?

We got embarassed at home by Charlotte and Toronto, and needed late game heroics by Melo to just sneak past the (now) 0-8 Wizards.

Knicks seem to be righting the ship since the 2nd half in Washington, but don't expect any love from the media just yet, ESPECIALLY from ESPN. We still need to put the new, Shumpified Knicks up against some winning teams first.

So if we beat the Sixers (#1 on Hollinger Rankings), will we still be in the 20s lol?

Hollinger's ratings are based a LOT on strength of schedule. I don't agree with that at all, but so it goes. The Knicks have supposedly fattened up on the weak. Yet any team that beat the Knicks probably gets credit for beating a 5-4 team... so the formula seems kinda stupid to me.

His PER formula is also flawed.

I guess we'll see if the Knicks are the 24th best team in the league by the end of the year. lol. what an ass hole.

The power rankings are gonna be less informative this year with so many teams starting off shaky and out of synch. teams that came into the season already set from the previous year have an advantage. Teams like the Heat and Bulls really have an advantage in talent and chemistry. Knicks starting off a bit shaky is unfortunate, but in the end it doesn't matter. The knicks are using this season to get ready for the Playoffs, develop chemistry and experience for the young guys.

I'd almost say it would take 20 or so game for the rankings to become valid.

Points differential is a big thing for the rankings, and we haven't been so strong here. We've also only played one team with a winning record, so our record is probably inflated as a result, and the power ranking is supposed to correct for artificially inflated records.

Its a verysmall sample set, and I would surmise they give much weight to who you beat and by how much. Probably still doesn't account for injuries to critical players etc, not sure if the score road wins higher than home wins. There are so many different factors that any formula you come up with has to have flaws. Closer to 20-25 games it will start evening out.

Hollinger's are just the formula so no hate there. They are especially volatile with a small sample size as we have now. I never look at his untill at least midway into the season. Steins didn't include our revenge on the Bobcats but are accurate for now. We'll have to beat some middling or good teams to move up. No non-knicks fan is really going to be impressed with us edging out the Bobcats and Wizards.

We are 14th in win percentage right now, so Hollinger isn't that far off.

Hollinger designed the formula in order to underestimate the Knicks. You didn't realize that?

To be fair, we have had a ridiculously easy schedule so far- playing poor teams and with games that have been relatively well spaced considering this years shortened season. We've had our moments, but overall we haven't faced any tough opposition, and we've been shaky even in the games we've won against poor teams, so I don't expect us to be high in any power poll. I know it's exciting showing improvement and winning a few games in a row, but keep some perspective in mind.

However, I will say the Sixers have also had an easy schedule:

Portland (a good team)- LOSS
Suns (very poor this year), Jazz, Warriors, Hornets, Pistons, Raptors, Pacers (wow an actual good team), Kings= WINS

That schedule is just as easy as ours! How are they number 1? I think they're fools gold- they had an advantage over other teams because they've played together for years so weren't as effected by the short preseason- hopefully they'll start to plummet in the standings soon.

So now that the Knicks beat Hollinger's #1 team, he'll probably bump them up from 24 to 23 LOL
