Any rule should have exceptions: Triangle and all-team-defense.
We have 2 components out of 3... That’s why CP was a better fit that Chandler.
No money left so we need to make the PG in-house. Tuff... but not impossible.

I think Baron or Shump can become that third star. In all seriousness.

Hawks, Lakers and Heat are 3 good teams without good PGs that come to mind immediately. If 12-15 teams are good ones that's 20-25% exception rate. We never really had star PG play though we made it to the finals in the Ewing days. It's an important position for sure though. Probably second to the pivot imho.

It can be interesting with Shunp...
If he will get it at PG we will have something special...
Not saying he can be pure man Clide... but who knows?

He has found our guys for easy looks once he gets into the paint. When bdiddy gets back and we can move shump to the 2guard spot we will have a very good passing team. I think bdiddy/shump/melo can pass the ball and find our bigs for easy looks inside.

The combination of Shumpert, Davis, and possibly Nash next season will more than satisfy the need for top guard-play.

This is a great question. Let's define a 'star'.

Is it some minimum stats? Most stars drop 20+ points per game, unless they are the little guards, where the scoring might be under 20 but the assists are almost always, I estimate, something like over 8 per game. But then you have Shareef Abdul Rahim, who dropped 20/9 for the meat and potatoes of his career, but was never considered a star. So do we consider some amount of wins? Marbury was a star when he was winning 30 games a year.

Shumpert can emerge in next couple years into a star. For now, I'll take awesome D, facilitating offense, and most importantly "W's".

+1 I love this point (guardedly)

Anybody considering JKidd a star at this point in his geriatric years is huffing something they shouldn't be...

No money left so we need to make the PG in-house. Tuff... but not impossible.

So the exceptions are the Lakers 2000, 2001, 2002, Detroit Pistons 2004, Miami Heat 2006, Lakers, 2008, 2009, 2010 and Dallas 2011.

Might want to rethink your golden rule. Or even if you don't, I like the odds of us being yet another exception!

The truth is there is nor rule- sometimes the same team that won a championship can come back and suck (Miami 2007), or sometimes a team that failed to win one year, can come back and win it the next.

NBA team needs 3 stars to win - C/PF SF/SG and PG. This is the rule.
