if you recall correctly, the Knicks were honed in on LeBron. That was their first priority. And then it would have been whomever LeBron wanted to team with, and my impression was it would have been a big man like Amare or Bosh.
I think the Knicks were initially trying to sell LeBron on teaming up with Johnson in NY if i remember corrently. They were trying to sell the LeBron/JJ/Gallo trio as being comparable to Jordan/Pippen/Kukoc. Seemed logical at the time.
I would take a different perspective: Knicks would have sold LeBron on teaming up with whomever he wanted and JJ may have been an outside target IF he was in LeBron's peripheral.
More than likely JJ engaged the Knicks (or any team really, Knicks just had the capspace and media circus) to push the price up on Atlanta. And he succeeded. It's clear he could have gone to other teams that were in a better position to make deeper playoff runs, so most likely he wanted the $'s.
