Can Chauncey Billups get amnestied by the Knicks & holdout to rejoin the Knicks at the veteran minimum?

Idea:

Are there any rules preventing this scenario:

If the Knicks complete the signing of Tyson Chandler and amnesty Chauncey Billups, can Billups holdout until he rejoins the Knicks at the veteran minimum?

if he gets claimed, I would think he is gone - and I can't imagine he doesn't get claimed.

Then, yea- I suppose he could play hardball - but I would expect he wants to go to Denver over NYC.

Two more questions:
1) Does getting amnestied mean the player doesn't get his money? In that case, he'd never do us any favors.
2) How does the timing of all this work? I assume we have to amnesty Billups first and then if the deal falls through with Chandler, we're totally screwed.

as I understand it amnesty players cant go back to their old team

1. No. Players get their money it just doesn't count against the cap.
