There's reports that the Warriors will try to sign Tyson Chandler and use their amnesty clause on Biedrins. If that happen's he's a big who can help us. He'd immediately be our best rebounder and he's a decent shot blocker. I don't know if we could get him to sign a one year deal, but it can't hurt to try.

from another thread:

So, a guy like RJ is absolutely out of the question for the Knicks.

I have read in several places that the Warriors will not use the amnesty on Biedrins. I also read an article where the author made the point that a better use of it would be to use it to get out of Lee's contract. I don't know the length of Biedrin's contract but I am guessing that it fits the criteria Martin mentioned so he would not be a canidate for the Knicks. I do agree that he would be a great pick up.

He played 1 or 2 great seasons about 4 years ago and since injuries hasn't been the same. He might not make it through, as we are over the cap. Low cap team's gets first bids on amnesty players first. He was an absolute beast prior to his contract or one year in to it. He hasn't shown that quality of play since...

we don't have cap room. only teams with cap room can bid on the amnestied players.

if the player clears the "claim/waiver" period and no one puts in a bid - only then will the player become a free agent. and then any team can sign that player to any amount and they will still get their original amnestied contract (minus the amount they get from their new team).

so, i think the chances are very slim that any amnestied player (who is still useful and just has a bad contract) makes it all the way thru to free agency.

that said, i would do backflips if we got biedrins. really like that guy and think he'd be a perfect fit for d'antoni and next to stat.

when i read info on the amnesty rules I didn't come away with the above understanding. Doesn't mean the above is incorrect, but I didn't see it that way.

I thought that teams over the cap COULD bid on players, but that teams under cap had first dibs. That's the way i read it.

either way, only way Knicks would go after an anmestied played would be if they were on 1-year deal.

Nobody really knows how it'll work because the final details haven't been worked out yet; but the basic gist is that once a player is waived there will be a bidding process for teams under the cap, and whoever bids the most gets the rights to that player. If no team bids on a player they become a free agent and can sign with anyone.
