The two sides will meet again Friday, and there’s a push within the league office and from Players Association executive director Billy Hunter to have Fisher in the room, league sources said. Nevertheless, Fisher hasn’t committed to attending the meeting, perhaps because of legal concerns about how a judge in the federal suit could view his participation. There’s still a sense the owners could be setting up a trap for the Players Association, perhaps leading them on in talks now only to pull the plug and make a case to the judge that Hunter’s and Fisher’s involvement in the meetings shows they’re still acting as a union – and that the disclaimer of interest and subsequent lawsuits were nothing more than negotiating tactics.

Ah GEEZ! See this is what happens when u play games. No one trusts anyone! They've pulled the football away so many times the players just don't believe the owners really want to do a deal. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail and they both realize it's in their best interests to get a deal done now.

I think the players have a pretty good case against Stern and the owners. However, their chance of winning is probably 50/50 and history with the NFL has these cases going on for 3 years. That being said, I don't think Fisher should go anywhere near those negotiations and I am surprised that Hunter is the one calling for that. The only reason the owners are entertaining negotiating with the players is because litigation is pending and they have to respond by 12/5. Hopefully Boies and Quinn keep Fisher away from the proceedings so that there is no chance for shenanigans from Stern and the owners.

I think keeping Fisher away is the smart move no matter what. Remember the owners filed a suit with the NLRB trying to legally prevent the Players Association from disbanding to prevent anti-trust lawsuits.

I agree- there is no reason Fisher needs to be there anyways- if they need to know the players would agree to the deal, they have Hunter there, and they could just invite someone like Billups who's named in the case vs the NBA, to get an idea as to whether the players would accept it. If the NBA keps insisting Fisher is there, then yes I would suspect it was a trap too.

I'm also unsure of the idea of squeezing 66 games in- we saw the effects of the 50 game season, but at least that pace was only kept up for a couple of months- I really doubt the players could keep that kind of pace (back to back to backs etc) for an extra month or two. I also don't see how they could start by christmas- Stern said 30 days are needed between reaching an agreement and starting the season, but now that the union has disclaimed, it will surely take a bit longer (law suit needs to be settled, then the union needs to be reformed). Remember there were also 30 b list issues that still hadn't been agreed on either.

+1.

Fisher would be a fool to fall for this obvious ploy. Negotiations are done. Anything that needs to be conveyed can be done through the lawyers and if they want Fisher, then they text/email him the important stuff. If he shows face, it WILL hurt the players anti-trust case.

If both side agreed that they were close to a deal, then it should be a few minor adjustments..The lawyers on both sides already know what they want..fisher is not needed.

Personally, i dont want fisher, hunter or stern near these negotiaitions.. they suck

Fisher will be in the meeting according to Wojo. He also says this suggests a deal is close. I still don't buy it.

Fisher going is a huge risk. From Wojo article tonight:
After deliberating for 24 hours, Players Association president Derek Fisher(notes) flew to New York on Thursday night to prepare for Friday’s labor settlement meeting with the NBA, a league source told Yahoo! Sports.

His appearance in this week’s negotiations – along with that of several other key Players Association officials – figures to run the risk of validating the league’s charges that the disbanding of the union was a “sham” negotiating tactic. Nevertheless, the belief that the end of the five-month lockout is within reach this weekend inspired Fisher to make the risky move to join the talks.

I don't think it is smart to risk this. The owners already attempted in court to prevent the players from having the option of disbanding and filing an anti-trust lawsuit.

According to Howard Becks tweet, both sides agreed in advance that whatver happens in these talks can't be used in their arguments for litigation- which is why Fisher can now attend the talks today.

But maybe that agreement in advance was nothing more than a clever ruse to lure the players into a POV, taped meeting that can be used in the soon to be scheduled congressional hearings over whether the Dred Scott Decision should be revisited, and the players could then be held liable for the losses of the Kennesaw Mountain Landis estate due to all that race mongering that was done back at the turn of the twentieth century.

It's a trap!

So the guys who attempted to legally prevent the players from being able to decertify the union by filing a suit with the NLRB would never do anything that would jepordize the players current pending anti-trust litigation against them?

This is hardly a concealed conspiracy. They are still treating the players as if they are represented by Hunter and Fisher, two nice guys who are probably novices when it comes to business negotiations. But now that they have two of the best American lawyers involved, things should be a lot smoother. Fisher ought to stay away and let the lawyers wok out a deal.

After all, NBA-types do have cell phones these days.
