Hey guys, I'm planning on visiting NYC from November 10-13 and was hoping I could get some advice. My buddies and I are driving down and will be staying in West Village. I'm sure parking will kill us but a road trip isn't the same on a bus. Any idea how expensive parking will be? Once we're there we do plan on taking the subway around. If anyone knows how much would a day pass costs, that would be helpful.

I haven't been to NYC in nearly a decade. Any advice on how to enjoy the city on a budget is appreciated. Ie. Good bars that aren't too expensive, where to go and what to see, perhaps where to score some green :), etc. Once again any advice you can offer would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance.

You could park at a metro north station and take the train in. I know Croton Harmon used to have a paid lot. I am not sure about other stops.

you can park in the LES on the street. plenty of access to the city and plenty nice spots right in the vicinity. wouldn't leave any valuables in the car though.

you got any friends in the area? because the best trees are usually copped from delivery services. don't know if it's recommended you cop from the street.

I've heard that people used to park illegally and grab the ticket from the windshield in front of theirs to make it look like they've already been ticketed, and get free parking.

That's what I've heard, anyway

I downloaded the app, its very useful. Unfortunately, I Doubt i'll be able to use it in NY though, with the crazy roaming charges and all. Hopefully I can find some wifi to use it. Thanks a lot!

Thanks, that could definitely work as an option.

Do you know if street parking is expensive as opposed to a lot? Up here in Toronto, street parking is like a two-three hour limit before having to pay again. We kind of just want to park the car somewhere nearby for the 3 days and take the subway around. Parking in the LES would be really convenient though.

Nope, don't know anyone in the area. I was thinking of hitting up the NYU campus and trying my luck there but im kind of weary of that. Any recommendations on how to get a hold of a delivery service? Sorry for all the questions.

I've done that before but to no avail lol. Up here the parking enforcers just give you additional tickets on top of the ones you already have.

Oh and thanks for all the help guys, I appreciate it.

Delivery is tough cause usually someone has to vouch for you. If you really need it that bad, I'd try to talk to someone who likes like they smoke I guess.

But whatever you do, don't buy from a shady looking street dealer. Especially in Wash Sq park (I notice you said NYU). There's professional hustlers there that will manage to sell you some shrubs. Happened to one of my friends and I thought, 'no way that could happen to me', and then years later after I forgot his story, it happened to me. ;)

So, near NYU, students might be good to ask I guess. But Wash Sq park is a no-no.

Where are you coming in from? If I were you I'd park at Metro Park in NJ (or another state's equivalent) and take the train to Penn Station

I used to live in the West Village. If you circle around the area north of 10th street between Hudson and Greenwich you should be able to find a spot. It might take you half an hour or so, unless you're lucky. Other neighborhoods with good parking are Chelsea (between 18th and 24th streets) and the Upper West Side. Your best bet is to take the time to find street parking. You may have to move your car depending on the alternate side of the street rules, so pay attention to the signs.

If you decide to skip the hassle and go for a garage, you can find one for around $40/day, not too bad if you're splitting it with a bunch of guys.

yeah, in the LES you can find free parking on the street, you might just have to circle around for a while. if you are only here on the weekend, chances are you won't even have to worry about alternate side parking. go down to ridge st. between houston and delancey and you'll probably find parking there or on adjacent streets.

good luck. like someone else said, you'd probably need someone to vouch for you. tough call. college kid might be a decent bet. why not just cop by you and bring it with you? also, be careful. in NYC possession will get you a mere ticket, but having it in public view can get you a night in jail.

Thanks, I've heard some stories about Wash Sq park, I'll definitely stay away from there. I'll try my luck at NYU.

Coming in from Toronto aka Bargnani country, lol. Still contemplating doing this or at the Croton Harmon one. Should we hold any concern of leaving a car with out of town plates in Jersey for 3-4 days? I've heard it's not the best thing to do.

I'm a little confused as to what alternate side of the street rules are. Sounds like I might have to move the car often. Alternatively, there's 6 of us so splitting parking wont be that bad. Just trying to figure out whether it would be easier/better to park at a train station and take the train in or save the hassle and park in West Village. What would you recommend?

Thanks, that helps. Same deal up here but I wasn't sure about Manhattan. Wifi will be a savior especially since that app is extremely helpful.

Thanks again guys, you've been very helpful so far. Sucks that there is no basketball, definitely wanted to catch a Knicks game at MSG.

It sounds like it might be a lot more convenient to just spend an hour searching for parking in Manhattan than parking in NJ or somewhere else and taking the train in. I'll be there from Thursday and leave on Sunday. I'll have to google alternative side parking because I have no idea what that is at the moment.

At this point we're probably just going to try the NYU campus. Going to be driving down from Toronto, don't want to cross the border with it. Just seems way too risky.

Wow, that's insane, never heard of having it in public view leading to a night in jail. Here in Toronto, everyone has it in public view, unless you're in the suburbs. Thanks for the heads up. Gotta say, sounds like a hassle copping without having someone to vouch for you in NYC.

Thanks again for all your help guys, if you're ever planning a trip to Toronto, I'd be glad to help out. I wanted to ask you guys about bars, clubs, etc. I figure there's an insane amount of bars and clubs in Manhattan (Always been told to hit up the Meat Packing District). Could you guys recommend any that you like or think are good, but hopefully not super expensive.
