Meeting Over, Meet Again Monday

After nearly six hours of talks at a Manhattan hotel, representatives of the owners and players adjourned until Monday afternoon, offering a bit of hope that the NBA's full 82-game season can be preserved. David Stern and Billy Hunter both declined comment on whether progress was made as the meeting broke up just before midnight. They will reconvene Monday at 2 p.m.

Hunter did say his planned meeting with players in Los Angeles Monday morning will be rescheduled and Derek Fisher tossed in a note of skepticism if not pessimism. As Howard Beck tweeted, "Fisher says not necessarily any closer to deal now than when night began, but back at it tomorrow."

Stern, of course, had said earlier in the week that if there was no progress by Monday, he was ready to cancel the first two weeks of regular season games. Then, talks stalled over a precondition that the players accept a 50-50 split in basketball related income. That precondition was apparently dropped Sunday morning and the evening talks scheduled.

This is from Netsdaily but is also being reported by many others. Netsdaily is the only source that gives more than a one-two sentence description and the site that I link to twitter links from.

Steve Mitchell/U.S. PresswireThere is still no NBA deal done as the players and owners head into the deadline day for starting the season on time.
NEW YORK — NBA players and owners still have no deal headed into the deadline for starting the season on time.

Negotiators for the sides met for more than five hours Sunday before breaking for the night. They are scheduled to return Monday afternoon.

Neither side offered many details, though union officials confirmed they scrapped a planned meeting with membership in Los Angeles and will instead remain in New York to talk with league officials again.

If they can’t come to a deal then, Commissioner David Stern has said the first two weeks of the regular season will be canceled. It is scheduled to begin Nov. 1.

Man I hope they can get this thing done. At this point there so close that it's silly to keep fighting. IF the owners come up just a bit and the players come down they've got a deal on the split and can get to the rest of the business. I'll be furious if they don't get something done at this point.

It seems like they must be making progress or at least sensing the urgency at hand. The players association has rescheduled two meetings so that these meetings can take place.

Something's got to happen soon, or NY Sports will be reduced to hoping that the Eagles continue to be a fiery car wreck.

And please don't mention hockey.
