He has signed with the Chinese Basketball Association for the whole year with no opt out.

He is the first player to man up and say FU to the owners to go play somewhere else without an out clause.

I wonder if the new CBA will have a provision for players in his circumstance.
If not, is he still a Restricted Free Agent when he returns???

I think someone in another thread brought up that he is a restricted free agent because the Nuggets made him a qualifying offer. I wonder if that means they still is a restricted free agent the following season if he returns?

WOW! I'm a bit surprised. This could get serious for Stern and the League if enough players really believe that there will be no season or very little of a season. It diminishes the bargaining power of the NBA if players that weren't making a ton of money anyway start going to other leagues. There are a lot of other options for lower echelon players. Not to mention that the top players could do mini league exhibition type BB here in the states and elsewhere. Sure it's not all of the money they'd make but being able to supplement their NBA salary would help them to be able to stand firm against the league.

Stern needs to get this thing hashed out soon, cuz it's just not the old days when there were no options for the players. Sure nothing is the NBA, but they can make some money in other places now. Funny how all of Sterns effort to make the league global have actually come back to bite him in the butt.

Ok, one player is going. Most won't. Stern is not worried about Wilson.

Nuggs have to be pissed.

I believe Chandler is the second player. Earl Clark has signed as well. Plus this is still early. The longer this goes on with no movement the more of a chance there is that more non-stars will do something like this to make money.

The Nets have 5 guys going. I think Williams is the only one with an out.

From Netsdaily:

Gaines Reportedly Signs In Georgia (The Country)

Sundiata Gaines is about to become the fifth Net to head overseas. Sportando, the European hoops site, reports that Gaines is headed for B.C. Armia, the reigning champ in the former Soviet republic of Georgia. Gaines, who signed a two year deal in mid-season, fractured his hip in March.

Gaines' contract ends next July and if he doesn't play somewhere this season, his opportunities are likely to be limited in 2012-13. Gaines will join Deron Williams (Turkey), Sasha Vujacic (Turkey), Mario West (Italy) and Jordan Farmar (Israel) overseas. The Nets already lead the NBA in defections.

I would anticipate that once October hits and there is no deal, you will see an exodus of NBA players heading to Europe. I would enjoy at 30-50 guys will go play over there for $1-$3 million. The way the players can really come up is if they form their own league here. It would take 2-3 years to really get going, but without having to pay a franschise fee or support things like the WNBA, a new league could put more money in the players hands.

farmar has 2 more years on his NBA contract with the Nets. I would assume he has an out. The language on Gains makes it appear he has an out.
Deron has an out.

From what I can tell Chandler is the only starter type player who won't be returning if there is a season.

I don't think there will be an "exodus" from guys with big contracts. There are 450 players in the NBA. I'd say many are on the bubble at any given time. Say 10%? Some need the money.

Chinese won't give an out and only so many american players per team in Europe. The guys that go need to be the guys that stay. How many free agents are there? By that, how many older players who are year to year anyway and maybe not interested in playing overseas.

Form another league?

The second the league ends the lockout a new league is cooked. 3 years to form a new league means every player with a contract won't get paid on it. Not gonna happen! Need stars for a new league!

So Wilson basically said: I'd rather play in China for a full year than potentially go back to Denver.

Wow.

Seriously puts the Denver franchise in a new light.

Suppose he gets cut? Or hurt? Or speaks out against the Emperor?

Come back Wilson, all is forgiven!

Remember way before the trade when it was being rumored about though, Wilson said something along the lines of "Who would want to play in Denver" or something like that. This signing just puts things in perspective now.

I wouldn't underestimate the players looking for other options and taking advantage of them. 450 players sounds like a lot, but they don't all have to go somewhere else for there to be an impact. I just think the league needs to start getting realistic about this.

1st off NBA franchises aren't real businesses. These teams are a luxury!!! You don't buy into the league thinking you're gonna make tons of money. That's been the reality for a LONG time. It's a high cost business and their efforts to try and fix costs are extreme because the cows already out of the barn. Now you want players to GIVE BACK A TON OF MONEY? I can't imagine anyone easily going along with that. They need to scale it back and also look for other ways to reach profitability as a league. Both the Owners and Players better fix this thing before it gets out of hand, cuz they'll lose the fans again and it won't be easy to get back to the level of interest they have now.

Nets would be happy to not have to play in an empty arena again.

ESPN mentioned the deal was more than 1.7 million but less than Denver's QO of 3.3 million. Smart move for Wilson to get the guaranteed cash.

He must have dumped Happy Walters for a reason.

and if the season is only half a season.......Then there it is!

My guess he comes back he is still a restricted? Anyone know?

Or with a whole new CBA there is no answer!

That is the question. My guess is that they will hold Wilson to still be a RFA. He would still be on the rookie scale contract. But an interesting situation, what if Wilson comes back in April, ready to play. Does Denver honor their qualifying offer to Wilson and does that count as playing a season? Is Wilson free to play for another team if Denver doesn't take him back/make him an offer/allow him to take their QO.??

Hopefully he has the ability to become an UFA. My backup plan to Chris Paul is Steve Nash along with Wilson Chandler or Javale McGee depending on who we have at center at that point.
