But I was thinking about how well Joe Johnson would fit on this team. If Atl decides to blow it up around the deadline and just build around Horford, Teague, etc and attaining Chris Paul or another top tier player is no longer realistic, we should consider a deal for Johnson. We will need to bargain hunt for another second tier star anyway because we are in win-now mode. Sign Aaron Gray or Kwame Brown this summer to upgrade the center position and at the deadline deal Billups, Fields, Turiaf, Balkman, and cash for Joe Johnson and Kirk Hinrich.

C Gray/Jordan
PF Stoudemire/Williams
SF Anthony/Walker
SG Johnson/Douglas
PG Hinrich/Shumpert

This could be a contender. Most will feel Johnson's contract is not tolerable, and if that is the case, what other second tier stars might be available to upgrade this team?

on the other hand, Atlanta would surely turn that deal down too.

Starting backcourt for Fields (essentially) and nothing else but cap room?

Atl says no now, but if they struggle and try and blow it up they will be lucky to get a deal that rids them of these big contracts.

you don't think they can get more than just cap room and Fields?

Hinrich was traded from Wiz for first round picks and other. Joe Johnson is an all-star.

How you will use another volume shooter close to Melo?
There is not enough shots for this 2 on one team.
This team need defensive center and playmaker PG.
It will be great to get some bench too...
On other hand if you are talking about Fantasy bbal - this is a contender!!!

jj is a volume shooter on a team with no cinsistent scorer. he has taken the back seat and done well when he was in phoenix. he is also a pretty good defender in that spot. the three of them would give other team nightmares and jj wouldnt have to be "the man" like he has to in atl. however, we have no assets to trade. even if they decide to blow the team up, if other teams got wind of jj being available, they will offer more enticing deals than fields and fillers. he can be the missing piece in a number of fringe teams. so we cant "lowball" atlanta.

Atlanta would want upside talent or high pick potential. At best, you can move Billups expiring and Landry. Is Landry the upside potential player they seek? If so, why should we not keep him?

Exactly my point. Johnson was a different player in phoenix and would become that player again in new york if a trade ever went down.
