Donnie Walsh did a great job getting us Stat, Melo, Billups, Felton, Gallo and a couple of solid late picks in Fields and Douglas. He did everything he could have to get this team back to respectability, and as happy i am with this team, i definitely got thinking; What would have happened if we drafted right in 2008 and 2009 when Walsh had his first chances to get this rebuilding process off on the right foot. In 2008, Eric Gordon was really the best player on the board, as good as Gallo turned out to be. Gordon is now a rising star and the top young SG in the league. No one knew that Brook Lopez would translate into as good a center as he is, so i'm not really concerned about him. The one that got away in 2008 is Eric Gordon, he was the most proven player on the board and filled a major need moving forward.

In 2009 we were in the same boat, and in addition bought a late pick specifically for Douglas. Douglas turned into a solid player and Hill was trash. Now trading Hill allowed us to trade Jeffries and free up 2 max spots for the summer, and that was the goal. But let's forget that because we only got one max player last summer anyways. We needed a PG bad and were looking hard at drafting Jrue Holiday. Forget about Jennings because we weren't considering him and i don't like this game anyways, he's a less talented player in the mold of Iverson, Francis, Marbury, etc. Players who can put up numbers but will never lead a team very far. But Jrue Holiday has quietly become one of the top young PGs in the game. He is a strong 2-way guard with good, but not great upside. But our front office liked Hill and went with size and potential. Holiday was the one that got away and should have been the pick. With the late pick Douglas is great and was the plan for that pick. But as soon as Dejaun Blair dropped because of his injury concerns, we should have taken a chance. He lacked the upside of Hill, but many thought he would be more productive earlier in his career. And they were right. Blair got away from us as well as most other teams, then the team finally smart enough to get him was SA, no surprise.

Now all of this is hypothetical and i understand scenarios like this change what happens next, but let's say we still had the same opportunities to add Stat and Melo alongside this amazing supporting cast. I guess i can dream about it and wake up when the lockout ends.

C Blair
PF Stoudemire
SF Melo
SG Gordon
PG Holiday

I really wanted the Knicks to take Buddinger or Blair with the Douglas pick. I actually wanted them to take either of those guys witht the Hill pick. I think Buddinger would have blown up a lot sooner under D'Antoni and maybe the Knicks would not have given up the farm in the Melo trade.

I don't understand how Donnie has to trade Gallo, but gets to hold onto Gordon in the Melo deal

Remember this is hypothetical, but if you must need an explanation: Chandler, Fields, Curry, and Mozgov for Melo. In this scenario we would still be able to draft Fields and still sign Mozgov.
