Cano has been mine and my kids' favorite player for a number of years. We certainly didn't expect this. Just delightful!

PHOENIX — Jose Cano pitched six games for the Houston Astros at the end of the 1989 season. Chances are, though, that his most gratifying pitches in a major league park came Monday night in the Home Run Derby at Chase Field.

Cano pitched to his son, Robinson, who won the event with 12 home runs in the final round to beat Adrian Gonzalez of the Boston Red Sox. Robinson Cano drilled the winning shot over the fence in right-center field, lifted his arms in the air, and found his father, wrapping him in a bear hug.

Cano became the third Yankee to win the derby, after Tino Martinez in Cleveland in 1997 and Jason Giambi in Milwaukee in 2002. Joe Torre, Cano’s former manager with the Yankees, presented Cano with the winner’s trophy.

“The best thing is not my swing, it’s the gentleman that was throwing B.P., my dad,” Cano said on the field, adding later, “I want to tell him he’s one of the best fathers, thank him for the support and making me who I am today.”

Jose Bautista, Matt Holliday, Matt Kemp and Rickie Weeks were eliminated in the first round, and Prince Fielder and David Ortiz lost in the second round.

Great. Now do it in real games. He just beat out guys who frequently have 40+ HR seasons.

Tino!!!!

Another yankee who found more power in pinstripes!!!!

I miss the Roid era!

Contrats Robbie! Best secnod basemen in all of baseball!

Yankee infield is pretty sick when you think about it. When your second basemen wins the HR derby your strong! He was a viable MVP candidate last year.

I'd say he was a favorite to get the MVP until late in the season. He was batting over .360 even after the break. Dude has an amazing swing and don't get me started on his fielding: Mind-blowing about sums it up.

Has been my favorite Yankee for years as well. I have my #24 jersey I wear with pride between Cano and Tino.

After Cano hit number 11, he goes to hug his dad who just keeps telling him, "One more."

"I love you dad."

Just an awesome moment.

Too bad I was at a board meeting for my kids' baseball league at the time. Effing missed it. Guess it's probably on YouTube by now.

What's more fitting in a moment like this than doing something for your kids? Internet's got you covered.

It was even more uplifting than I thought. Usually the Home Run Derby is kind of "yeah, whatever" but this time (with the Cano family) it was solid baseball entertainment.

Much obliged, Matt. Thanks.
