Nate Robinson Contemplating NFL Tryout During Lockout
Jul 12, 2011 2:02 AM EDT

While many NBA players have been exploring their playing options overseas if the lockout lingers, Oklahoma City guard Nate Robinson is contemplating something more unique: trying out for the NFL.

Robinson originally signed with the University of Washington on a football scholarship and played one year as a 5'9 CB.

“I might go play football,” the 5-foot-9 Robinson said. “Do something that nobody's tried to do. If I can, I would love to play football a little bit. I've been doing a little bit of training. Why wouldn't you want to have an NBA player that can play football try out? That's a lot of publicity for your organization.

Yeah seriously he should stick with the NBA where being 5'9 isn't a disadvantage.

he wasn't exactly known for his ball hawkin d in the NBA. I can't believe he used to be a DB.

And, yeah, his height makes him, at best, a nickel. A good offensive coordinator will get the Randy Mosses and Plaxico Buresses of the world one-on-one with Nate and they'll just reach over him, or the ball will get thrown to the back shoulder

Measurements and combine stats matter much, much more in football than in basketball because each football position has a very specific task for small intervals of time

I hope nate saves his money. Not just "pissing" it away!

Nate as a boxer might work. Nate could be "special".

Some of you guys need to stick to basketball...Ever heard of this guy?
http://www.nfl.com/draft/2009/tracker#dt-tabs:dt-by-position/dt-by-position-input:cb
5'9 179lbs
Lardarius Webb (CB)
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 179
College: Nicholls St.
Conference: Southland
Hometown: Opelika, AL
High School: Beauregard
Pick Analysis: The Ravens grab a dual-threat playmaker with outstanding ball skills. Webb has a knack for getting his hands on the ball and he's dynamic in the return game. He will compete for playing time as a sub-defender in the Ravens' scheme.

How about this guy?
Rookie Focus: Vontae Davis making big impact in Miami
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/dolphins/2009-12-08-rookie-focus-vontae-davis_N.htm?csp=34
Few prospects -- in the 2009 draft or otherwise -- boast Davis' combination of size and athleticism. This is, outside of maybe his brother. Three years ago, it was Vernon Davis, Vontae's older brother, who rode a shocking Combine performance into being the San Francisco 49ers' choice with the sixth overall pick of the 2006 draft.
Throughout his career, Vontae Davis has demonstrated the same caliber of jaw-dropping athleticism as his older brother -- and been even more impressive in his ability to transfer that athleticism into gridiron success. Despite leaving after his junior season, Davis is a two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection at cornerback with a history of stepping up his play against top competition. He's physical (led all Big Ten cornerbacks with 78 tackles in 2008) and flashes playmaking ability (seven interceptions, two blocked kicks), but perhaps because the game seems to come so easy to him, there remain concerns about just how far he will develop.

Nate would have a good impact on the football field...I played ball with Vontae Davis, and he's more like 5'10....he's nice in basketball....his brother Vernon Davis suck in ball....

I just met L.Webb this weekend at Derrek Mason's football camp, and he's more like 5'9 (maybe).

The only problem with Nate is that he's out of football shape...But if he played football in college instead of basketball, and went straight to the NFL....He would be a beast on the field, especially in the return game!

^^^you are kidding right? ive heard of both these guys - they both are marginal at best and definately not the norm for a CB/returner. davis is listed closer to 6feet but i'll give you the 5;10'' for sake of argument. nate is like 5'8'' ON A GOOD DAY. plus, these guys work on football 24/7. nate is a bball player and hasnt suited up in a football uni since college. these are grown men in the nfl he would be auditioning against.

you know what though, i would love to see him take a crack at returning a kickoff - he would get the smile smacked off him permanently if one of these defensive return specialists got a good lick on him. now THAT would be a great youtube.

nate is more suited for the circus (getting shot out of a cannon comes to mind) than the nfl...

I will say this. Nate is a uber-athlete. The dude has a 44"+ vert and I would imagine probably has 4.5 speed. He could be a corner, nickel back, and maybe even a running back. The issue is whether any NFL team would really give him a shot. He probably would need to go play in the Arena Football league or the Canadian league first and prove himself and find a position. If he did well, I could see an NFL team giving him a shot.

LOL, I thought I was going crazy. The average nfl corner back is about 5'10. being 6 foot or taller and a DB is kinda the extremes of the position. If nate has the skills he is athlete enough to be a DB.

I could see Nate being successful as a special teams player - kick off & punt returns (if he can focus on catching the ball) & then maybe as a scat back on certain offensive plays.

But, why go from one locked out league to another?

He is better off going to Europe where he can be a side show act during games.
