Interesting little twist as Patrick continues his quest for a head coaching job.

I was just talking to my dad last week who worked on Ewing's sneaker campaign and had worked with a few of his people back in the day. He doesn't think Ewing has the right mentality to be a coach. I reminded him that people change and the coach Ewing is likely extremely far removed from the player, especially back in his hey day at MSG. I'm pulling the guy to not only get a job, but to be good. It would be great if he came back to NYC one of these days...maybe he can finally get his ring with NY like he was supposed to.

I loved Ewing the player. He was a warrior in the purest form of the term. But I am not at all interested in Ewing the head coach. He needs to prove himself elsewhere before I'd invite him to be anything more than a "Big Man" coach.

That's kind of a myopic point of view. Have you worked with him? It just happens that two of his jobs have been working with bigs who were also the franchise players. He's been THE man on a team and can relate to that and the pressure, that transcends position. He's also seen a ton of playoff action and can speak to that. What's more, he's 48 and has worked with a few excellent coaches...he's not the same man anymore. AND he's defensively focused, much more so than or likely anyone that wants on his staff ever will be.

I'm a bit shocked at the lack of love for Ewing as a potential coach.

He's probably not a fit for us now- but if I were the Knicks owner, I would replace D'Antoni so fast, and Ewing would be one guy I would go to.

The dude never ever showed any kind of vocal leadership, he would lead by example, which is fine as a player/captin but certainly not as a coach.

But he couldn't do that with Yao and Dwight, but folks say he's been able to convey his points to these guys and help them. Phil Jackson wasn't a great orator but became a great coach/personality manager. To assume the 48 year old Patrick Ewing is the same as the player from a decade ago, let alone two is kind of silly. He's already proven to be a worthwhile coach or he wouldn't have a job.

Well said. Patrick's role as a player was different. I think it is short sighted to assume that he hasn't evolved as a person and evolved in the position he has been in for the past few years.
