No excuses for this - America is in the throws of an economic meltdown and the rich sports moguls and players are taking away something the people of this country enjoy at possibly the worst time.

Football looks awful right now, I hope the NBA is a little wiser and cuts a fair deal that makes sense - and does it quickly.

It's so distasteful. I remember how long it took Baseball to get back in good with the fans. The leagues just don't get it. The thing is that the NBA is full of crap. It turns out that really most of the losses that the NBA is reporting is coming from the Kings and the Hornets. It's not true that the LEAGUE is losing money. Only certain franchises. Besides do they want us to believe that the entire league is operating at a loss or just break even??? What it is, is that the owners want to GUARANTEE at least 10% profit across the board. They want the players to give back about 800 mil in salaries, plus a hard cap, plus shorter contracts etc. Sure there have been some players getting paid for nothing, but really the salaries are on the Owners and GM's for giving bad contracts. Some of the owners haven't done a good job of monetizing the owning of an NBA franchise. So it's a lack of good business and creativity. The freaking NBA is the most popular American sport globally too.

It sucks. I love watching the summer leagues and trying to find guys that might make an impact on the team next year. I always find it hard after the draft to wait until the second week in July to check out all of the rookies. There is so much more coverage of the NBA now and this years playoffs were amazing. The league is on the rise. Hopefully this can be worked out without losing an entire season.

NBA Cancels Vegas Summer League
Jun 17, 2011 9:08 PM EDT

As a matter of timing and logistics, NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver announced that the league would be canceling Las Vegas Summer League this weekend – though the move is not meant to send any signals to the players.

“It was purely a function of the calendar and drop-dead dates with hotels and the arena,” Silver said.

It's sounding like it's only the Vegas Summer League. Isn't there an Orlando Summer League and Rocky Mountain Summer League we could enter?

Silver seems to be putting a spin on it. It's being canceled for a reason and I don't think that's it at all.

The owners wanting a yearly profit is a bit disingenuous. The franchises themselves tend to gain in value over time, in spite of their losses. If the owners want to guarantee a profit, they should also disburse a portion of any profit they make to a players fund when they sell their team.

If owners bought teams to make money, there wouldn't be any teams changing hands. The players are hopefully somewhat aware of this in the back of their mind.

Rose is not the answer.

The NBA really needs to be careful not to kill off the good will they've gained. On the whole they could solve their own problems with Contraction. The Hornets don't have to exist!!! They won't do that tho. They want to send that team to a new city and collect the fees, plus we all know that a new city is gonna support the team at least for a few years. So much hypocrisy from the owners. The players in my mind already gave back when they agreed to the limits on contracts and FA movement. Now the owners are back for more. I have no sympathy for them.

love the greed of the nfl and the nba. nba is coming off it's highest rated finals and playoffs ever and the nfl is enjoying their crazy success and both want to alienate the fans that are making them rich. smart.

No Summer League will mean no practices to prepare for the transition to the NBA. This will make it less likely rookies and new roster arrivals will have much impact on the new rosters. The draft is considered 'weak' yet 'deep' My take on this few superstars available. A lot of potential for NBA 'rotation' players.
