Knicks haven't used the D-League, but will now run their own team in Erie, Pa. Allan Houston will be the GM, perfect grooming spot.

completely agree, on both accounts. Now the league needs to get their heads out of their collective asses and do what is necessary to ensure there is a true two-way minor league system. Seems a bit ridiculous that id you send a player down he counts against the roster

NCAA Basketball = NBA Minor League System

A 2 way Minor League system would just kill NCAA basketball.

no it isn't, it's just a showcase before you get drafted.

Great move indeed. They can also start grooming head coaches in the D-League. The big question is how many players can you own the rights to once they start playing for your D-League team?

Why stay an extra 3 yrs or go to school at all if teams can draft you and stash you for a few years in the USA.

We aren't getting a true minor league system because NCAA Basketball is big money.

because there are no DLeague groupies and you can get laid left and right in college. And the pay is better.

no ****. This is not about getting a true minor league system, it's about the Knicks getting a Dleague team.

There is a difference between a minor league system and what the NCAA does. A minor league system allows you to develop your own prospects with a staff that you hire and one that follows your organizational philosophy. Most players drafted are good enough to play in the NBA right away, but with the international pool etc. it makes sense to have a more worthwhile D league. Your D-League players shouldn't have to count against your roster however, and you should be able to retain the rights to a handful of players.

So wouldn't the

Minor League = showcase to get sent up to he majors?

As I said. The NCAA is the NBA's "minor league" system.

I heard that if (more) teams start getting their own D-League teams the league will probably up the available roster spots. That way you can draft players in the second and let them develop there without taking up a roster spot. Perhaps the 2nd round money wouldn't count against the cap too (unless you are called up or something like that.)

I hope the league does something like that, then our extra money will be useful to draft more players or buy more second round picks and develop those players.

Anybody here the like?

I understand that.

What I'm saying is the NBA isn't going to destroy the money making machine that is college basketball. If the NBA has a true minor league system they'd have to make the age limit 21 or at least 3 yrs of college which also isn't going to happen.

no, cause there is the whole draft thing. It's a showcase and development step before you get drafted.

Also, think of the possibilities. If you stock your D-league team well, they can be trade assets, just like in MLB. I don't see the union getting in the way anytime soon, it's just too new.

The NBA does not profit a dime from the NCAA.

Baseball has minorleague and NCAA baseball.

Many top baseball prospects come out of college. College baseball seems to be growing.

Its a good way for Houston to get his feet wet. Gives him a chance to show he has what it takes to be a GM on some level.
