According to ESPN News Services, the Warriors have indeed decided to hire Jackson.

Via Twitter, ESPN's Marc Stein reported Monday night that "NBA coaching sources say Warriors have made 'generous' offer to Mike Malone to convince him to join Mark Jackson's staff over Mike Brown's."

Mark Jackson's leadership skills as a player more than outweighed his lack of coaching experience when it came time for the Golden State Warriors to hire their coach.

The Warriors hired Jackson to replace Keith Smart on Monday, giving the former point guard and television analyst his first chance to be a head coach on the game's biggest stage.

Jackson's deal is worth $6 million over three years with a team option for a fourth year, a source told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher.

"He epitomized leadership as a player in this league for 17 seasons and we think that characteristic -- and many other positive traits -- will translate very well into his coaching duties with our young team," owner Joe Lacob said in a statement. "He was a leader and a winner both on and off the floor in this league and we're convinced that he is the right person to guide this team into the future and help us achieve the success that we are striving for as an organization."

Jackson played 17 years as a point guard in the NBA, for New York, the Clippers, Indiana, Denver, Toronto, Utah and Houston. He won Rookie of the Year honors in 1988 and made the playoffs 14 times. He ranks third on the NBA's all-time assists list.

But he has never coached, spending the past few seasons as the lead analyst for ESPN and ABC for their NBA coverage. He won't start his new job until after he's finished calling the NBA Finals.

His first coaching job is a daunting one, taking over a team that has made the playoffs just once since 1994.

"I am really elated about this opportunity and I'm looking forward to the challenge of building the Warriors into a perennial contender," Jackson said.

In an effort to build a solid staff of assistants around Jackson, the Warriors have made a "generous" offer to New Orleans Hornets assistant coach Mike Malone to serve as Jackson's top assistant, NBA coaching sources told ESPN.com's Marc Stein.

Sources say that the Warriors have even discussed the possibility of offering the title of associate head coach to convince Malone to come to Golden State as opposed to accepting an offer to reunite with new Lakers coach Mike Brown in Los Angeles, although one source close to the process described that step as just one "consideration."

Malone interviewed with the Lakers on Monday, sources said, after NBA.com's David Aldridge reported that Malone had his final interview with Golden State on Sunday. Brown badly wants to hire Malone and freshly fired ex-Detroit Pistons coach John Kuester as assistants in L.A. to join a staff that will also feature Ettore Messina. Reports in Italy surfaced over the weekend that Brown has convinced Messina, one of Europe's most successful coaches, to finally jump to the NBA as a full-time Lakers consultant.

But because the Lakers have provided Brown with a limited budget to build out his staff, sources said Monday night that the Warriors are still in a strong position in the Malone chase because new Golden State owner Joe Lacob can comfortably outbid L.A. Sources say Lacob is determined to surround Jackson with the best possible bench to offset Jackson's lack of coaching experience.

Jackson played for five Hall of Fame coaches in his college and pro career: Lou Carnesecca, Lenny Wilkens, Jerry Sloan, Pat Riley and Larry Brown.

Jackson, 46, had been looking to get into coaching while working as an analyst in recent years. He interviewed for the opening in New Orleans last year and was one of three finalists for the Minnesota job in 2009, but lost out to Kurt Rambis. He also interviewed in previous years for openings in Phoenix, New York and Chicago.

He finally ended up getting the offer he wanted from the Warriors, who have made big changes in the front office and coaching staff under Lacob's new ownership.

"I have sensed that Joe is committed to winning and building a team and a culture the right way," Jackson said. "I think we all witnessed that with some of the recent front office additions as well and some of the other positive things that have been done in recent months. This is an incredible opportunity."

The hiring of Jackson is the latest move by Lacob, who took over the team last year after buying it from Chris Cohan for a record $450 million. The team cut ties with Don Nelson before Lacob and co-owner Peter Guber officially took over ownership and Smart coached the team to a 36-46 mark this past season.

But Smart did not keep the job despite Golden State showing a 10-game improvement in the standings. Lacob also hired Hall of Famer Jerry West as a consultant last month and former agent Bob Myers as assistant general manager and GM in waiting in April.

Jackson takes over a team led by a high-scoring but undersized backcourt of Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry. But Golden State lacks an inside presence.

"He will bring a youthful and fresh approach to our team and the fact that he enjoyed a stellar playing career, where he served most of that time as the leader of some very successful teams, will prove invaluable in the long run," general manager Larry Riley said. "We were looking for a coach with leadership ability and a strong personality and believe Mark possesses those qualities. He's very well respected in NBA circles, is a consummate professional and his knowledge and background will be an incredible asset for our team and organization."

Perfect situation for Mark Jackson. Nowhere to go but up with that young team.

Good for Mark. I hope he finds success in his 1st job. He's always seemed like a guy that could get into coaching. It's funny seeing a guy from the block doing all this. Mark and Steven A came from the same neighborhood as me growing up. It seems like such a long time ago now. Me and Mark are the same age and it's gonna be something to see him on the sidelines rather than on the court or behind the mic.

Mark Jackson can coach.

He was a coach on the floor for 18 years as a professional and 4 full productive seasons at St Johns.

Golden State will be one of the best stories of the new season...

If there is a season.

Jackson said in an interview that he wants his team to play uptempo but also play defense as well. Jax said he knows that you can't win without a championship without defense.

Don't have to win a championship to coach a championship team, ask Doc Rivers. As for defense, you're right that definitely was not
his strong suit but I think part of it was that Jackson didn't have much in the way of lateral movement. If he makes it a priority from day one it can be done.

“He has a strong personality, not abrasive, but he has a strong personality and should have the right mix to lead our team,” Riley said. “I think he’ll be a guy who will relate to our team. That’s important. That was part of this decision. That was an ingredient we were looking for. Not only can he relate to the team, he can get the point across and get results.”

Dunno about you guys but I can see players rapidly tuning him out since he's repetitive and makes boring/uninsightful points. For golden state's sake I hope they get some stellar assistants.

According to San Jose Mercury News Michael Malone (defensive minded coach) is joining Jackson as his top assistant. Jerry West even say they will be a good combo.

knickstorrents - when was the last time you were in an NBA locker room?

The players will dig Mark Jackson because as a person he commands respect. Jackson has a presence. When I met him briefly he gave me the impression of someone who was comfortable in his own skin. That is another way of "keeping it real." Players will relate to that first. He has a great personality and the ability to convey information.

Mark has been incredibly candid on air at times...

JVG mentions how Miami put on the full court press to recruit Brendan Haywood by visiting his house...

Mark Jackson...."What has become of this league teams feel the need to go to Brendan Haywood's house to recruit him. Sorry I'm not going to your house to recruit you Haywood, meet me halfway son"

That's some classic ish right there. Obviously he canned a lot of the persona but he and JVG were very good together.

1.) Love MJ
2.) Will probably be a very good coach
3.) You don't know for sure until he does it.
4.) We will find out

I've coached for a long time. I've come across guys who make me silly with their leadership abiliites and yet I outcoached them. I've come across guys with no personality, oafs, jerks that can coach the hell out of a team. You just don't know what is going to work until they actually do it. There is no formula. Lenny Wilkens was nice, understanding and could relate. Doc Rivers is honest and fits the mold of Mark. Phil Jackson is hands off, philosophical, sarcastic, talks about players to the press. Larry Brown was a selfish ogre, abrasive but a great teacher. Popovich and Thibodeau are task masters that yell a lot and are never satisfied. Chuck Daly was a father figure who always thought the sky was falling. They all won. Plenty of guys with similar approaches who lost. Some stars become great coaches. Some are awful. Some guys are leaders on the court but can't lead on the court. Some guys can't get off the bench but can coach the hizzell out of a team. Mark Jackson has a lot of the coaching cliches that you look for, but we won't know if he will be a good coach until it occurs.

To be a great coach regardless of your style you have to be the following:

A leader
A manager
A mentor
A father figure
A friend
A disciplinarian
An expert on all things basketball
A patient person
A person with no patience
A counselor
And much more.....

I just hope that people will like me
