The Houston Rockets have reached agreement on a contract for Kevin McHale to become their new coach, Yahoo! Sports is reporting.

The Houston Chronicle reported earlier Friday that McHale had been offered the job.

After interviewing numerous coaches in their search to replace Rick Adelman, the Rockets narrowed their focus to McHale, who worked as an analyst for TNT this season, Boston Celtics assistant coach Lawrence Frank and Dallas Mavericks assistant Dwane Casey, according to sources.

McHale, formerly the Minnesota Timberwolves' general manager, was 39-55 in two stints as the Wolves' interim coach. He was 19-12 after taking over for Flip Saunders in the 2004-05 season and posted a 20-43 mark after replacing Randy Wittman for the final 63 games in the 2008-09 season.

thabeet, jordan hill, and patrick patterson should all benefit from mchale's guidance.

McHale could be a very sought out trainer/consultant. Teaching players how to play in the post. Its too bad he feels like it has to be a top job or nothing.

1) Who cares about Shaq being on TNT, he'd be funny at times, but he doesn't strike me as being a good television personality because he speaks slow and low as hell.

2) Rick Adelman is not much better than MDA, if he is actually better, and he wouldn't improve us very much, if at all.

3) Thank God Kevin McHale is done with TV. He was about as irritating to listen to as you can ask of someone.

How is McHale an upgrade over Adelman? I don't get the Rockets at all.

I don't see Brown as a retread. He is a good coach and might have been the best canidate. I don't like the McHale hire but more because he sucked @ss as a gm then because he coached the Wolves for parts of a season twice.

I'm not sure how much McHale sucked as a GM. I mean, he did help lead the Celtics to an NBA championship in 2008

I take Mike Brown with a grain of salt. Cleveland's success was pretty clearly due entirely to LeBron James and Mike Brown hasn't proven that he can out-coach the elite guys, which he'll have to do with the Lakers. Not my favorite hire for LA, but I know why they did it.

Howard Beck has a great article on Brown today I believe. It does a nice job of stating why he is qualified for that big of a job and also points to his strength, coaching defense.

Yeah some are confusing Mchale the coach vs Mchale the gm. This isn't like our former dual role exec/coach we had a few yrs ago who was horrific at both

I can only ask why. So much for Daryl Morey the genius. McHale is an idiot and does not belong in an NBA front office or bench. Great player- thats it.
